No audio capture since I use DMF5
hi and sorry for my poor english, I'm from Paris, France !!!!
yesterday, I've installed the french DMF5 release. Following the advice of Ulead, I've let the previous version of DMF : version 4.....
As soon as DMF5 has benne installed, I've trioed to make some video capture, and the video had the following details :
Source : USB Instant TV box gor analogic TV, connected on the PV via the USB port and to the TV via the S-Video cable.
Video format : MPEG-2
24 bits, 720 * 576, 4:3
PAL DVD
Video data rate : Constant 8000 kbps
Audio data rate : 256 kbps Digital Dolby audio, 2/0(L,R)
I only make this capture on my hard drive and tried to play it either using the internal DMF5 player, or the Windows Media Player.... but no audio, mute.....
What is very strange is that when I make the same kind of video capture with the Ulead DVD Diskerecorder 2.2 that is included in the DMF5 package, everything is ok, video ANDF audio, using exactly the same parameters....
Did somebodey had this kind of issue with DMF5 (knowing that everything has always worked fine with DMF4) ?

I've made since yesterday several significant tests in order to understand what is happening. But before I've a couple of questions for which I don't have logical explanations :
1. why, in DMF5, when I want to capture a video from my USB Instant TV box, the choice of the audio device (internal audio card or USB device from the external ADS Instant TV box) is limited to my internal audio card ? With DMF4, iw was possible to choose between the internal audio card OR the external USB audio device.....
2. My USB Instant TV device is connected to my digital receiver using an s-video cable for the video... it is connected by a simple 'jack' cable for the sound. With DMF4, I had so many issues when the audio cable was directly connected to the USB Instant 'line in' audio input, that Ulead suggested to me to connect the audio cable directly to the 'line in' inout on the audio card of my PC..... That was working fine, but the sound and the video were a little bit de-synchronised........
3. I've discovered yesterday that, with DMF5, it was possible to have some sound, only if the audio cable coming from my digital receveir is directly connected to the USB Instant TV 'line in' device. Then I'ave some sound.. And if, in DMF5, I change the audio entry input (line in, aux, cd player, etc).. it has no impact...... The BIG issue, is that the quality of the sound is totally random.. It could be fine during 30 minutes, then totally 'scartchy', horrible during a couple of minutes... then it comme back normal.... And I've cheched the record level of the USS EMP device from my USB Instant TV box.........
Then, last but not least, when I use Diskrecorder 2.2 or DMF5 (using the USB audio device), the registered sound is MONO. To have a stereo sound, I'm obliged, on EACH video,, with a right click with the mouse on the video, to choose 'audio output parameter' then 'divide G+R' (sorry I translate the menues in english, I suppose that G+R is Left+right).
I've checked evrywhere IN DMF5, there is no parameter to specifiy that the default audio has to be MONO... very, very strange.......
I've strongly the feeling that DMF5 need to be seriously fixed on a lot of bugs and, I hoper, it will have to be done quickly !!!!

I have no idea why MF4 worked for you, and MF5 is not working....
I always recommend using the special capture software that came with your hardware. Analog capture is the trickiest part of digital video. Some capture hardware just doesn't work well with some capture software. This seems especially true if the capture device has a built-in hardware MPEG encoder. (My theory is that capture device-drivers are not as standardized as more common computer peripherals, like printers.)
Another option for you is to use MF4 for capture, and then use MF5 for everything else. (Of course, you should not have to do that!)

in fact, I also had the issue with DMF4 : when I was recording through my ADSTech USB Instant TV using its 'line in' audio input, I had, randomly, some scratchy sound in the video.... the beginning of the recordinded video was always fine, then for no logical reason, the sound was horrible then coming back to fine then to horrible, etc, etc.....
the capture software included in the USB instant TV box was the Ulead Home TV Software..... infortunately, with this software, the onlt way to record the audio was to connect the audio cable coming from my digital receiver to the 'line in' audio input of the capture 'box'.....
this is why Ulead sent me DMF3 SE, because this software was offering the choice, for audio recording, between the USB EMP audio device of the US Instant TV box, or the 'line in' input of the audio card of py PC... That resolved the problem, but for me, I was not totally satisfied....
I upgraded DMF3 to DMF4 and the same audio issue occured..... I contacted the french Ulead support by phone, we ran some tests, and something was very surprising for them : as soon as I started a video capture with DMF4, I was checking the bandwidth of the composite USB device.... this percentage was jumping from 2% to 397% !!!!! for Ulead the highest value for this parameter, suring a video capture should me around 90%......
also, one of the reason that made me choose to upgrade to DMF5 was the capability to start a video capture at a precise time of the day and to delay the starting of the capture, without to be in front of py PC....
this is why I'm very dissapointed that, in DMF5, the choice of the internal audio input of the PC has no effect on the audio, contrary to DMF4 in wgich this parameter was working.......

and... last but not least..... the way DMF5 is working is absolutely unpredictable....
yesterday I tried to create a 1,5 hours DVD (Glenn Gould captured on french TV)... I removed all creation of any menu.... The starting menu of the DVD was a fixed image with only the 'start' button... no chapter menu, no animated menu...
the creation of the DVD took almost 3 hours.. it did create 14 menus (almost 500Mo).. and the result is a mess.... I had to re-do all the processe, because, after the first creation process, I realised that I had forgotten to declare, in the very first menu of DMF5, that I had to split in two channels the original video file.. if you don't, it creates a final mono version (the original file is stereo)..... understandable......
when I try to create a menu with just a black background pic..... and I save the project.. when I recall the project, I always have this awful menu with horrible flowers..... Then, after having put 3 or 4 times my black backroung picture...it works..... I don't undertand how have been tested DMF5, but I have the feeling that this version contains still a LOT of bugs.....
and of course, I always have the audio problem : unable to get the sound from my 'entry line' input.. this option was working in DMF4.. it doesn't with DMF5......

something else that I discovered this morning about this audio problem with DMF5 : I can capture the audio stream of a video only if I connecte the cable coming from my digital TV receiver directly on my video ADS Instant TV audio input....
well, if it was working properly that wouldn't be a problem.... But, as I told it above, after a couple of minutes, the sound is awful.. then comes back 'normal', then awful, etc, etc.... That's why the only solution was for me to connect the audio cable to my PC line audio input.... The choice of the audio was still a possible choice with DMF4 (USB audio port OR internal audio card) but is no longer possible with DMF5. If I connect the audio cable on my PC audio line input, the video is mute, even if I try to change all possible audio input parameters on my PC....
on the other hand, the sound is not only awful when it comes from the USB connection, but also, it is in Mono, except if I 'divide' the audio stream in two channels (L+R) during the DVD realisation.. that means that it takes a lot more time to have the final DVD, but also I have, on the DVD, two audio streamings.. strange......
but what is stranger and stranger is that this phenomen happens only if I capture the audio using the Dolby parameters.... If I choose LPCM or MPEG, the final DVD is stereo, like the original captured video... only if I choose Dolby, the DVD will be MONO....
I submitted this issue a couple of weeks ago to Ulead... but now answer, just a big and irritating silence. I wrote to their hot-line again a couple of days ago.. same result, no answer..... very, very irritating....
something else : I've set all the video standard parameters of DMF5 to PAL/SECAM, but when I capture a video, in the 'capture option' window, the fps is set to 29.970 fps, and ther is no possibility to change it....
the way this DMF5 version is running is absolutely unlogical compared to the previous dMF4 version... some usaful things have disapeared (templates, etc) and some new functionnalitiés don't work at all....
If Ulead doesn't quickly answer to my requests, I think that I will ask to be refunded... this version has still tons of problems......

of course this could help, but what I don't appreciate at all, is that DMF5 seems to be much more instable compared to DMF4 !!!!
on py PC are installed : DMF5, DMF4 and DiskRecorder 2.2... the last two are working fine without any bad surprise....compared to DMF5 in which some basic functionnality have been removed (choice of the USB video capture audio device for instance), etc, etc.....
If I have to do 10 manipulations with DMF5 in order to have a final result comparable to the one produced by DMF4 of Diskrecorder 2.2, I think that DMF5 is a totally waste of money.... I bought it just because there was the possibility to delay the start of a record to a specific time time.. that's all... but I even cannot use this functionnality (one of the only thing which works properly in DMF5) because the audio captured via the USB port is randomly awful (reason why I used my audio line entry of my PC)....
and of course, no asnwser from Ulead on this subject.....

I agree with you on almost all points !!! except that I am unable to understand, after having tried many different paramters combinations, why everything was working fine with DMF4 and why almost nothing is working correctly with DMF5 !!!
I've red several posts about DMF5 in this Web board, and I'm very much surprised to constat that a LOT of people are complaining about the fact that DMF5 seems to not have been correctly tested, or has been put in the market too soon, with too much bugs that affect the way the software is running.
The way some functions are running is totally unpredictable and illogical... the way the parameters appear in some screens is also some times illogical : almost 30% or 40% of the setting can not me modified !!!! so why did Ulead let them appear ?
why do I have NTSC and 29.970 fps that appears everywhere ? I've declared in the general parameters window that I'm using a PAL/SECAM configuration.. that was working with DMF4... it does no longer with version 5.... why Dolby is always monaural and not stereo ? why no sound capture on the audio 'line entry' of my PC, etc, etc, etc...
and of course, why ULEAD don't answer when I submit (like other people here) to their hot-line all the problems that I've described ?
or may be, there is a kind of 'censure'.. they answer to the people who don't complain on the Web board, but not to those who are describing their issues here.....

I had MOVIE FACTORY 4 and everything worked fine, so when 5 came out I UPGADED to 5, and had the same problem, no sound with analogue capture using my internal capture card. After several e-mails to ULEAD Support, they asked me for my PC and capture card manufacturers, which are MEDION and PHILIPS, and was informed that the drivers for capture used by 5 are not compatible with my system, hope this helps?
