Cool3D Built-In Graphics Editor

Post by OinkyPig »

Hi,
Newbie here.

After looking through various Cool3D forums, I am pretty much amazed by the 3D models that can be made.
My quick question for those heavy hitters out there, what is the graphics editor preferrably used.
My mini project is to create a snowing scene where the camera zooms to an igloo.
Two tries:
1) Tried using the lathe creator in PS version to make a quarter arc, freehand mode (so it becomes semicircle . Well my drawings needs tutoring and when I try to adjust, it always becomes worse.
2) Create a sphere and a cylinder, join them together. How to split into halfs so it bears some resembance to an igloo??

Any advise to do it better / easier?

Thanks for any advice given.

Somehow, those beautiful 3D models graphics are not made in Cool3D graphics editor right.

Probably the biggest limitation to cool 3-D is the vector path editor, to create vector files outside of Coo 3-D you need one that saves in th AI extension (adobe illustrator $$$). Why it doesn't import the propietary UFO's from Ulead is beyond me.

Besides that the best alternative is to create B&W images in photo editor, preferably large ones. Use the convert to vector image from image feature in the path editing panel.

OinkyPig,
The easiest way to create an igloo in COOL3D PS is to use lathe editor and draw circle. The use adjust and add nodes and move to the inner section creating a "U" shape. Of course more circular. This will create your dome. Much easier than trying to do it in freehand or path mode. Then in graphics editor use square shape and draw a rectangle. Then adjust it's thickness using bevel option. Then use bend to make it into a tunnel. Then move tunnel so it is the opening and connect it to dome. Group objects and apply photo texture. That's it.

As for the graphics editor. it is your drawing board. Manipulation using object effects and freeform aid in the modeling process. Yes, everything from videos to models was created using COOL 3D PS.

OinkyPig I totally agree with your words.

You wi=onder why they wouldn't include something as simple as that, instead forcing you to use the built in path editor which is no comparison to the pi's editor..

BTW Praebo..... I totally agree with yor argument. :D

Because it's not as simple as you think it is.

Importing vector files into Cool3D requires that the paths in the image be CLOSED. Since PhotoImpact only produces OPEN paths even using the native *.ufo format won't help.

That said any vector based program that can save Windows Metafile, Adobe Illustrator or Enhanced Metafile with closed paths should be able to create vector graphics for use in Cool3D.

So can 3D programs that can create either 3D Studio *.3ds or DirectX *.x object files. This includes about any commercial 3D program but also freeware/open source tools like Blender.

http://blender.org/

For simple paths you can just save them from a raster based program (PI, Photoshop, PSP etc.) as a BMP or JPG, then run Cool3D's Path Editor and use its conversion tool to convert these bitmaps to closed path objects.

You can also use Cool3D's Insert Lathe Object tool to spin simple bitmap images into a very complex 3D object.
