Admin: please make *STICKY* as many ADS Instant DVD 2.0 users will have this problem capturing in VS9.

Subject: ADS Instant DVD 2.0 & VS9 Error Message:"Either no video..."
History: I bought ADS Instant DVD 2.0 (Part No.: USBAV 702 Rev A) bundled with the horrible and buggy Ulead Video Studio 7 SE. I wrote probably 4 pages on bugs/workarounds.
Upgraded to Video Studio 8 SE (Full Install) from a disk that shipped with my pioneer burner. Everything worked great and much much better than VS7 SE.
Upgraded to VS9 (Full Install): Program is even better than 8.
PROBLEM: I can't caputure from the ADS box directly. I get the error message:
"Either no video capture driver is installed in this system, or no device is connected."
I click OK, Tools, "Change Capture Plug-in" and there is no option for ADS Instant DVD 2.0. I then upgraded from capture wizard 3.12? to 3.6 and that ADS program works great. I can seed the video in the camera. Then I close the program and run Ulead VS9 and no capture device listed.
I Installed all the ADS patches and ulead patches. I read about other people with the same problems. I called Ulead today and the tech had no ideas about this. I even installed the old ulead vs 7 and it works fine.
I'm very technical and and followed best practices through out all installs/uninstalls. I have a full ghost backup of my system and 2 test systems that I can use.
I might resort to using the capture Wizard that shipped with the ADS box but I wanted to avoid encoding with and ADS codec and then reencoding with a VS9 codec thereby degrading the quality of the capture.

I have the Instant DVD 2.0 unit, and always use CapWiz to make my captures. The hardware device is doing the encoding to mpeg, so you could capture with either, but I prefer to use CapWiz.
NOTE: VS9 used to recognize my unit, but once I updated to recent drivers/capwiz, VS9 will no longer recognize the device.

George

VS7 & 9
VS 7 worked fine for awhile and then I started having synchronization issues. I then installed VS9 SE and it will not recognize my ADS device. Like you, I have tried everything. Right now because I'm in the middle of a huge project...I've been capturing it in VS7, then opening it in VS9. This works okay (just okay) to a degree. When creating chapters....quite a bit gets eliminated at play back. BUT, there are no synchronization issues with 9. I have e-mailed Ulead and have waited two months with no response. I was going to upgrade to 10 Full Version...but don't want to "waste" anymore $ if it's not going to work for me. If I have to, I'll hunt for another program. I do like Ulead's format and ease of use...BUT...it is soooooo buggy.
I recommend capturing from the ADS Tech device using their own software (CapWiz). If the ADS Tech device came with bundled software, then the bundled software should have the appropriate plugin to recognize/capture from the ADS Tech device.
Keep in mind that future releases of the "bundled" software don't necessarily include an updated plugin/driver to capture from the external device. For instance, the unit might come with Ulead VideoStudio 7SE. If Ulead releases VideoStudio 10 Plus, there is no gaurantee that it will recognize the capture device. Sometimes the companies involved will release updates for the capture driver, so it's good to check the support pages to see if any new drivers are available.

Thanks George for the info. I'm going to download the updated CapWiz...I'll have to wait for it though....it is a huge update..61MB and I'm one of the lucky ones with only dial-up. My daughter will download it for me with her DSL. So....on the CapWiz....should I transfer the whole shooten-sa-bang and then edit through VS9? I've been transferring TV programs, home movies, etc. that I want to keep and taking commercials out, etc. and I found that doing it in sections helps me remember "where I've left off"....but I will try CapWiz.
Thanx for the info.
Thanx for the info.
I have the ADS DVD XPRESS DX2 which I really like, and I've spoken with ADS tech support on a few ocassions regarding how their box does the MPEG 2 encoding. Two things are clear with any ADS device; first, ADS design a specific device to work only with the bundled software that it comes with; and second, you will always be better off using their excellent Cap Wiz software to capture footage. Any version of Video Studio will edit and render very well and capture and burn only competently.

Thanx Terry for the input. I used CapWiz briefly this AM and it will work for me...I will just have to un-learn my original way of doing things and incorporate CapWiz....I'll give it a thorough try when I get the new version. I have 3.0 right now and suspect 3.6 has quite a bit of improvement.
Thanx again!
