Wondering if anyone has any ideas about this.
Using VS9, that I just installed on a new Dell E 510 PC (Pent. D processor @ 2.8 Ghz, 1 GB dual channel DDR2 SDRAM, 250 GB Serial ATA HDD, video card: 256MB PCI Express x16 (ATI Radeon) , XP Home sp2)
Capturing from a Sony Digital 8 cam via firewire without any problem. No dropped frames, nothing. This is what is happening. After capturing, at some points in the timeline, the captured video just displays on the timeline only as black. Not all the video, just some. It displays in the VS preview window fine and also plays back OK. If I click on the timeline, the black is replaced by the video. All the captured video renders to MPEG2 OK and burns to DVD OK.
Just as a side note, this new PC does all the work from capture, edit, render and burn, like a rocket! (my last PC was a Pent III @ 833 Ghz) I'm very saitisfied with its performance. My first test of capturing 1 1/2 hours of .avi footage, over 13GBs, adding a lot of transitions, titles and other special effects, rendered to MPEG2 (7000 VBR) in under 3 hours. I don't know the exact time but I started the rendering the provess at 3 am and came back at 6 am and it was done.
Anyway, does anyone have any idea about the some of the video being displayed "black" in the timeline?
TIA,
Erock

One question: is the black colour consistent i.e. does it appear with all your captured videos? (Have you checked that you have selected 'Thumnails only' in Clip Display Mode in File > Preferences > General?)
If this is not it, then does the black only happen at times when you are actually playing through your captured clips in the timeline? I ask because with a variety of editing programs, including VS and Adobe Premiere Pro, I also get a similar effect when previewing my captured files, though the colour is not black but usually either pale blue in VS or pale green in Adobe.
But I have never worried about it. In my case, I am pretty sure that, with longer videos being played back in Project (as opposed to Clip) mode, the computer has to work overtime to play the video on the preview screen in much the way it will appear in a rendered and burnt DVD, so it discards less important functions such as showing all frames in the timeline as it passes. If you want to think of it another way, I simply think to myself that this aspect will 'catch up' shortly to the preview window display which, as in your case, displays perfectly. And sure enough, when I stop the playback, the timeline fills up quickly with all the 'missing' frames!

Ken,
I wanted to thank you for taking the time to provide me with possible answers to the problem I have been experiencing. I jalso wanted to let you know that I will not have access to my PC for a few days (going out of town on biz) but I will check when I get back and let you know.
Funny thing is I never experienced this with my old PC using VS6, VS8 and VS9.
