text issues

First i would like to know how to make the letters closer together when doing them vertically. They always seem to spread out. Perhaps it's the way I am doing it. I type the letter, then hit the enter key, do the next letter, hit the enter key and so on. Is there a different way?

Also, I am having a problem from time to time with photoimpact crashing and shutting down on me when I go to use the text portion. Nothing else, just that.

Any suggestions for these two things?

A lot of people had problems with the text function on PI11 after upgrading, and I did for several weeks. I solved it by accident, by defragging my PC. This seems to solve the problem, by grouping all the files together better which PI uses presumably.
