What's better than Media Studio Pro?

Post by Janice S »

This may be in the wrong area but I'm taxed as to know where it belongs, so, here goes:

I just bought MSP 8, the latest version but to be honest, it's a little slow saving files but more importantly, editing video is a bit awkward. And the refresh of the video seems a bit slow, even on my fast system. I could live with it all but for the awkward editing. Cutting video or using the transitions is too much of a pain. Too much as to be done to make a scene work well.

I love the interface of some other programs, such as Pinnacle Studio 8 but it's really just a toy and I can't take it seriously. Even their newer versions suffer from the same limitations and bugs. But the interface is excellent, that is, for editing video. If only they created the same interface with tens times the features and ease of use!

In both cases MSP and Studio 8, I suppose I got what I paid for. MSP is vastly superior to Studio 8, except for the interface. And I realize that is subjective.

But what I'm looking for is something much more elegant, stable, and, well, faster. But mainly elegant and WYSIWYG kind of interface.

I'm willing to pay ten times as much as MSP but would rather not waste time looking around. Money isn't a big deal, but wasting time is.

I'm using WinXP and will not move from the Windows format. Too lazy I guess, or don't have time for the learning curve, so, best not to suggest moving away from Windows.

I love creating my own DVD's from DV. I love editing but it can be a chore when the program is slow, buggy, or as I said, awkward.

What do you all suggest?

You can always try Vegas, Premier Pro, and Avid

Sorry...they all have learning curves :!:

Well I suggest that you complete your system specifications on your profile page for starters.

For all we know your running Windows XP on something silly like 256mb RAM and a crappy processor!

Janice,
Ulead Media Studio Pro 8 came with an entirely new interface which may seem awkward to other programs you have tried in the past. I have a hunch you would have liked Media Studio Pro 7 much better. Other bonuses is that it included vector-based CG Infinity and rotoscoping Video Paint modules as well. I have them both and I still use MSP7 but I'm probably alone on this preference.

Steve,

I've listed some profile info for you to enjoy. Not that it will prompt you to repspond. I'd guess you're just an old grump. I hate grumps!

rwernyei,

I started with MSP6 and am aware of the interface improvements. Well, most of them, anyway. I think.

Perhaps I came to the wrong place. I just wanted some advise on a much more expensive and elaborate program. MSP is great for what it does. It's not perfect and I'm afraid the same is true of me.

Janice,
I checked your specs and you have a very old graphics card which is probably attributing to your slow performance. As for a more expensive editor, there are many. The question is, do you need one? Are you using particular hardware that is determining a new editor choice? Do you need an editor with certain third party plugin support? These are some reasons to look elsewhere. For the most part, Ulead MSP can serve as a happy medium for any editing job for all types whether they are a hobbyist or professional. Its just a matter of how you incorporate your talents with other products. Example: I know a professional that uses MSP, Adobe After Effects, Photoshop and Cinema 4D in his workflow. His work is above and beyond what I've seen others producing.

No, I don't believe it's the video card. I tried a ATI Radeon X1600 and noticed no difference, or not much at least. I use it for other jobs, on another system.

As I think I mentioned, it's not the speed as much as the interface. I've been using MSP8 for 40 to 50 hours now.

> As for a more expensive editor, there are many

Boy, you nailed it there.

> The question is, do you need one?

Yes, Dad, I do need one. Regardless of needing, I want. That's why I posted here. It seems you'd like to convince me to continue using MSP. I guess you just want to save me money. I appreciate it but money is not important. Think I said that earlier. But I don't have time to get into a long discussion, one which will probably end the same, regardless. I know what I want, or at least, that I want something with an easier interface where creating transitions does not make me want to stop and watch reruns of The Love Boat.

You don't work for Ulead, do you? Please let's not try to convince me I enjoy something I don't or that I'm going to suddenly get with it. I like MSP, but not as much as I'd like. It isn't that I'm female, that I need to be taught something I don't need?

So, I've given you my updated profile and more info and the video card is not the problem. And if it had been, the real problem, as I said, is the interface. With that in mind, you must have an idea of what to recommend. I mean, you took this long, forced me to write this much. I'd like some compensation please.

Janice - you'd be grumpy if you lived in Birmingham (UK).

[edit] Also you might like to know we're all users, like you. Ulead employees don't frequent this board. Demanding compensation from us is like demanding common sense from the government - it just ain't gonna happen.

From the old grump....
Are you aware you can alter the look of the interface and set up hot keys to toggle between various layouts.

The old grump has set up these layouts

Download and run the following reg key
http://www.steve-jones.pwp.blueyonder.c ... otKeys.reg

Download the following
http://www.steve-jones.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/Layout.ult
Save it to
C:\Documents and Settings\Stephen\Application Data\Ulead Systems\Ulead MediaStudio Pro\8.0
but alter Stephen with your user name.

Now you should be able to open MediaStudio 8 then use
Alt-1 Alt-2 Alt-3 etc to toggle between various layouts.

Hope this helps from The Old Grump from wet and windy Birmingham UK

Something else to consider. Since you're in NY, if you live in the metro area, there are quite a few specialty stores for high end video products that have machines set up that you can demo. THis way you can test drive them to see if they meet your needs.

Of course the big advantage of Birmingham is that it has very few overly agressive American women.

Listen to the "OLD GRUMP"

Take it from someone who has used Media Studio for the past five or six generations... It is really the most bang for the buck.
I Avid Newscutter pro.. with all the software and hardware toys at the major market tv station where I work as an editor. Believe me, Avid has just as many quirks as MSP. Bear in mind when you are talking about seriously upgrading to an avid.. you gotta go with the mojo combo or higher. Minimum 2 grand not counting the pc. We have the network version.. 12 grand a pop. They are in dual processor pcs with 2 gigs of ram.. half a terrayte internal disk and a twenty terrabyte server. They still crash. They still do strange things... and the funny thing is.. they are no better (workflow wise) than MSP. Just different.
My company does corporate, industrial and not for profit videos for broadcast and internal use. All of our products look as good as any ive ever seen from avid..premiere or other systems costing a helluva lot more.
So take steves advise..if you dont like the layout, move it around so it suits you better. And as far as it not working smoothly, All my editing stations are home built asus mboards with one gig and radeon cards. No glitches.. quick renders and good display.
Hope this helps

Even if B'ham is a much bigger dump than Penang (and yes, I have been there and worked there, many times!). I agree parts of Georgetown and Butterworth are a bit depressing but the west side of the island is still very pleasant and relatively unspoilt.
