Hi Rob, welcome to the forums..
With VS8 there was the problem with OOS (Out Of Sync). Did you install all of the patches/fixes? You can find and download them here:

VS9 did not have that problem, unless you do a lot of editing to a compressed format like MPEG2, DivX, Xvid files. They just released VS10 and VS10 Plus. Ulead has improved greatly with these versions..
Also please complete your System Information in your profile. This information is vital in troubleshooting your problems.
