VHS movies to DVD

Post by JamesL »

What would be some software recommendations from ulead to just transfer VHS movies to DVD. It appears that they have more that one that may/would do this. I have a Hauppauge PVR-250 which may make a difference. Thanks a lot.

Hi James,

If you are just wanting to transfer the VHS to DVD, with limited editing, then either DVD MF4 Disc Creator or DVD MF5.
Now the Hauppauge issue comes into play. There are a couple of recent threads regarding usage of Hauppauge devices with MF5 and VS10+. Ulead did release Hauppauge patches for VS9 and MF4 DC.

I would suspect that they will do the same for VS10+ and MF5. Why these latest releases did not already support them without a fix is a mystery..

So, the only "working" program that they currently sell, that works with the Hauppauge card, is MF4 DC w/ patches applied.

Or I can use wintv to capture and then use VS10+ or MF5. Correct? I really do not want to use Pinnacle, but it does work with Hauppauge.

Is MF5 really better than MF4 DC?

Right! it's often best to use the special capture software that came with your capture device.

I actually use 3 different programs!
- WinTV to capture.
- A special-purpose MPEG editor (Womble).
- Ulead DVD Workshop Express for DVD authoring / burning.

...Sometimes 2 or 3 more programs, depending on what I'm doing... This hobby is freekin' expen$ive!

The Hauppauge card is MPEG only, which is BAD because MPEGs are not meant to be edited. I had "lip-sync" problems when I edited with Ulead. Even with a special-purpose editor, the video will be degraded if you do any editing that requires a decode/re-code cycle. (You can cut & splice without re-coding.)

I don't have Video Studio 10 yet, so I don't know if the MPEG editing issues have been fixed.

And FYI - Womble's new top-of-the-line editor ($140) has some limited DVD authoring, but it does not look as advanced as Movie Factory, and you need 3rd-party burning software (i.e. Roxie or Nero).
