Stuttering/vibratring video

Post by Bimbing »

I was succesful in burning a 3.5 hr DVD on DVD+R after editing & creating a video file (VS9) of a footage taken during my travel. The footage was shot with a Canon Elura85 MiniDV camcorder. The DVD played fine. However, a few days later I wanted to add Title pages in the DVD and also add menus. So, I Click Capture -> Import From DVD and put the obtained .mpg file in the timeline. I inserted title pages in 5 places. Then upon "Create Disk" I used the inserted 5 Title Pages as menu items. Then "Create a Video File and subsequently "Burn DVD".
Upon playing this 2nd generation DVD, it played well from the beginning up until the second inserted Title page. After this point, the bottom half of the screen showed a wavy and stuttering video.

Then I repeated the entire process from "Import From DVD" from the succesful original DVD to "Burn" as above. The resulting 2nd generation DVD played well from the beginning until the second inserted title page. This time the video "jumped" to the segment between the 3rd and 4th inserted Title Pages, but the sound was palying in the right order that was supposed to be the sound for the video after the second Title Page:

Video: Title Page 1 ---------> jump to video Title Page 3-4c ------>
Sound:Title Page 1 ---------> Title Page 2 ------->

I know that I have two problems but could not figured out what went wrong because they all came from the same original DVD that played fine. Did the problem occurred during the Import process or when it was re-Created after the Titla Page insertions?

Thank you for all the advises you could give me.

Do you still have the DVD-compatible mpeg-2 files you made and used on your original disc? If so, why don't you use them for the new disc?

Thanks, Ken, for your response. Before I attempted to "Import From DVD" I did try to work from the from the original mpeg-2 file that was used to burn the original DVD. However, after inserting the Title Pages and menus during the buring phase, when the burning phase was almost complete, I got an error "Reading error source file". That's why I tried to use the Import from DVD.

That sounds a bit strange, since it worked the first time. Can you give us the properties of the mpeg-2 file, and tell us exactly what steps you took in adding the title pages etc. Did you, for instance, make sure that 'Do not convert compliant mpeg files' was checked in the little cogwheel options in the bottom left of the burning module screen?

Stuttering/wavy video

The properties of the original mpeg file are the same as recommended in the "Avoid Problems: Use Recommended Procedure" outlined in #1 of this Forum.

I placed the original video file in the Timeline, then moved the cursor to about 1 min into the video. Then I clicked on "scissors" icon whereby the video file was cut into 2 segments. From the "Color" menu I inserted a cover page, add the Title Text, add background sound from the VS9 audio file for the Titale Page, Then I used the cursor again to the location where Title Page 2 was supposed to be inserted by following the same procedure as before (Cut, Cover Page, Title, Sound), etc. until all 5 Title pages were inserted.

Yes, I did clicked on the cogwheel and "Do not convert compliant MPEG files" was checked (I just looked again and this "Do not convert..." is checked by default.

I found this problem to be strange too, unless something happened to the original mpeg file. When I decided to use the successful DVD, I thought that nothing wrong could happen with the disk, but the results is the jumping of video while the sound remained in the correct order and/or bootom video became wavy after the 2nd Tital page.
Thanks, Ken

Yep! This is like what happens to me. I still have not found a solution for it. I don't understand what makes the 2nd edition footage jump and jitter where the first one did NOT. In my case, I had already inserted titles on my original, burned it as a DVD and then decided to add more titles later, thus creating my 2nd edition files... Again, the original does not jump in any way, only when captured the 2nd time it jumps at original title input areas. Very weird. If anyone comes up with a solution, I would be very grateful!

No one can accused you of not searching - You have found a thread 4 years old!
Do you think that because discs nowadays are so much cheaper than they were 4 years ago that it might be better to keep the original working disc as it is and simply burn the new titles onto another?

The problem with extracting the video from a home made disc is that the quality of the original video (probably from a camcorder or TV card) has already been degraded by converting it to "DVD." If you now extract that back to your computer and start rendering again you risk degrading it further - even if things such as "Do not convert compliant DVD file" are selected.
There is so much room for other errors to creep in, quality of discs, quality of burner, any slight hiccups with the computer - have you ever noticed a light bulb flicker? Have you ever heard a scratch on a record being played on a record player?
A bit of dust, dirt or fingermarks on the surface of a DVD disc can have an effect.
