NTSC on PAL TV

Post by giannis121 »

They have sent me a few VHS cassetes from Canada.
(While i live in Europe).
Are written in NTSC system. My VCR can play them, giving a PAL output to the TV.
I need to capture them in DVD resolution.
The problem is that when i choose NTSC the captured video is B/W.
When i choose PAL, is still B/W and there is a black stripe at the bottom of the screen lets say about 100 lines.
The only colorfull sellection is at SECAM, but with low resollution.
Allthough this resolution does not interest me.
Do you have any ideas on what is going on, or how i can solve this problem?
Thanks in advance!

Hi

You do not say how you are capturing the video? You are replaying VHS tapes via what ihardware nterface to a PC? Are you using UVS capture or a third party software product?

Are the Canadian Videos region free? or are they encrypted commercial recordings only intended for the Canadian market?

This is a hardware problem and not a software problem.
The TV Tuner circuitry is for NTSC.
You can only get a black and white picture on your computer when you use a PAL TV Card.

In replay, i use UVS and a card of pinnacle that has selection for both PAL and NTSC. The cassetes are region free and not encrypted.
The hardware i use is a new VCR VHS who plays NTSC on PAL.
Note that in my PAL TV i can see it in colour.
Thanks...

Most 'dual standard' VCRs marketed in Europe don't output a true NTSC signal — they output a hybrid signal called 'PAL60' when playing NTSC tapes. European TVs can process this hybrid signal so the NTSC program plays successfully on the TV. However, I suspect your Pinnacle capture card can only accept a pure NTSC or pure PAL signal and is unable to interpret the PAL60 signal output by your VCR.
