I've used external drives (USB2 and IEEE-1394) from Sony, LG, NEC, HP and LiteOn with VS9. Some in factory installed enclosures and others in aftermarket enclosures. All have worked perfectly. As an aside (not specific to VS9), I've found that I get better performance/faster write speeds using IEEE-1394/Firewire 400 vs. USB2. Doesn't make sense when you look at it from a data transfer rate prospective yet this has definitely been the case. I believe it has something to do with burst rates but I can't recall the specifcs.
I don’t’ have an external drive, but I wouldn’t expect any compatibility problems.
In theory, the operating system and drivers should make it “look like” any other drive, and it shouldn’t matter if the drive is ATA, SATA, SCSI, or USB.
