Workflow Question

Post by jjoshua »

geetings forumers,
I should begin by saying thanks for all the advice given on this forum
Have been a silent browser for some time and well, I have a question:
I'm working on a 90 minutes documentary and would like to break it up into manageable segments
So I have started to produce each segment and save it as a separate
project. I noticed that there is an insert project file option on the timeline
so I'm planning to put it all together (probably ten segments in all) that way.
Would it be better to
1 create a video file of each segment and then combine them.?
or would it be better to
2 import each segment as .dvp into the final project.?

Thanks

John

Importing projects and stringing them can be a tricky thing. The project settings must be identical. Even then, some settings may get changed in the projects. My vote is to make an avi from each project. This seems to work smoother.

There are many ways to skin this cat, but your idea does seem unnecessarily complicated. It's a pity you are on MSP7, because the multiple timelines of MSP8 would offer you the ideal solution to have everything in a single project.

Maybe you could download the free trial version of MSP8 and do this project with that????

I agree with Zoobie that importing AVI files directly would seem easier and more logical than inserting projects.

Thanks guys , will do as you advised
My output target is DVD for TV and I usually select the "perform non square pixel rendering" option .
But for my present project, as I'm going to render each segment
into avi and then bring them together into the final project,
Should the "perform non square pixel rendering" option be selected
for the rendering of the separate segments or only for the final project ?.

May be considering MSP8 soon

The multiple timelines works great, although I think this might be a source of one of the many crashes in MSP8. I've also stated in this forum that a timeline that is put in to the main timeline loses all it's customised sound settings (lower and higher volume levels for sounttracks and voice overs). Anyone experiencing the same problem?

What I do now is:

On shorter projects: Create different timelines, edit, render videos and then import the final clips into the main timeline for final output. This way I keep everything together.

For longer projects: Because of the unstability and crashes, I do each section on it's own (Like I did with MSP7) and then render them and put into a final DVP file to render the whole video. If you pick up problems with one project, it's not starting from scratch again. The disadvantage with this is all the sub- folder created for each project's backup folder. Can become a bit confusing if oyu don't name files well.

Hope that the instability will be fixed soon!

I do too and the results are great!
what I would like to know though is :
Should the "perform non square pixel rendering" option be selected
for the rendering of the separate segments or only for the final project ?.
The separate segments meaning the small manageable chapters that would be rendered into AVI before being imported again into a last timeline where the whole cat will be skinned.
