Editing is very slow

Post by jparnold »

I have noticed recently that as I add more video clips and transitions to a project using Videostudio (version 8) the updating of the timeline becomes slower and slower. This is very evident when I add a transition between two clips. The screen takes a few seconds to update and redisplay the timeline showing the inserted transition.
I have a Pentium 4 2.4Ghz with 1Gb memory (333Mhz) and a Nvidia 64Mb standard video card. I seem to remember that I once did not have this problem. I have recently upgraded memory from 512Mb to 1 Gb, could this be the reason?
I have the following preferences set -
Playback method - instant playback
Clip display mode - Thumbnail and filename
The slowness is driving me crazy.
Or is this normal for VideoStudio v8? Is Videostudio v9 better?
Is Mediastudio v7 better?

I didn't seem to have this problem with VS8, and yes VS9 is better. With VS7, I don't know, don't have that one.

However with VS10 it is much better. Also this seems more like there are other things running in the background, using up some of your processing power. Try disabling as much or all background applications. The more you add, the more VS is going to need, and it shouldn't be competing for the CPU..

Vidoman, he asked about Media Studio 7, not VS7....

But I remember having this problem with VS8 and I took on the habit of working with small sections of the project (proj1a.vsp, proj1b.vsp etc) then appending them in proj1.vsp for rendering.

I now realize I've lost this way of working since using VS9, so I guess the need is less compelling and since my patience has not increased I guess VS9 is faster than VS8.
