MSP SP & Anti-Shake Filter

Post by dennisbthomas »

Any chance that Ulead will include the Anti-Shake Filter from VS+ 10.0 in the upcoming service pack for MSP 8.0?

That's a neat feature for VSP hope we can get it in MSP 8.0 soon.

Thanks

I obviously cannot say whether there will be an anti-shake filter in SP1 but it is something I've been pressing Ulead for, for many years. Just be optimistic :)

Hi Devil

On the basis that the more people that ask, the greater the weight for Ulead to take note, I support Dennis' request. Many users of MSP will have the smaller-end of the market Camcorders and many of those camcorders' anti-shake mechanisms are not up to it. Having the possibility to correct shake, to some extent, during editing would be well received by us loyal users and a real selling point for Ulead generally.

Having said that, Devil, I do fully appreciate that adding such a feature may go beyond the parameters of SP1 and we may have to wait for a later version - 9, perhaps? (but it would be a very pleasant gift from Ulead if they did bundle something into SP1 as well as fix bugs).
Thanks & regards.

Thank you.

Looking forward with anticipation to the details when SP1 testing is finished - but I'll be very patient 'till then, whenever then will be.
Thanks & regards.

I ve tried many automatic correction tools - none really worked. I think it would be a must to be able to set manualy some "fixpoints".
It would be also very, very helpful to have a fine grid (millimeter paper) above the preview window (switchable of course). Then you could stabilize your videos with moving paths. (A grid in an overlay track is not such a good idea since this needs to be rendered.)

I will second the request for a grid, it's something I have previously mentioned. There is one in VideoStudio and I was surprised when I upgraded to MSP8 to find it didn't have one.
The grid would be useful for aligning Picture in Picture effects - as an addition to and not a replacement for the ability to specify x y co-ordinates.

That would be a fantastic addition! I do a lot of work with distance shots on high zoom, so even with a tripod I can get a substantial amount of shakng. Having an anti-shaking filter would be so great to have to clean those shots up!

There's a deshaker you can add to MSP now for a few bucks. It's called the Depan Global Motion Stabilizer. I haven't had much chance to goof with it as I'm presently using the free deshaker filter for Vdub which is excellent.

I've tried a number of deshakers. The best of a bad bunch is SteadyHand which has the limitation of working in DV Type 2. I found Depan to be fairly mediocre. The problem is that all the ones I've tried do not permit selective zones. I have a few specific shots that I use for testing. One is taken through the windscreen of a moving car and shows another car in the middle distance and some mountains in the distance. If the deshaker works on the bonnet of the car, then the other car and the mountains shake worse than un-deshaken. If it fixes on the other car, the the mountains still shake. If it fixes on the mountain, then the other car shakes (parallax!). One has no choice. Most deshakers operate on the whole frame but some add more weight to the centre of the image than to the edges (I think SteadyHand does this) , However, if you have your point of attention on the intersection of the thirds, this weighting is not too clever. I've been pressing for a selectable "attention point or area" for years, but no one seems to have resolved it, that I know of.

Deshakers are meant to be used on a subject with the zoom maximized. You won't have much luck with a clip thats already moving thru a windscreen.

Just a little note on Anti-shake/Deshaker filters..

I've tried several, and wasted my money on Arcsoft's filter. Most of them focus on the center of the frame. I find they enlarge and use a blurring to overcome the shaking in the video.

I have a video clip that was shot while riding on a motorcyle, traveling down the highway. Now this clip shakes quite badly. I also have a clip that I shot of my granddaughter riding her bicycle on the street. I was walking while filming. I ran both clips through ArcSoft antishake and the Antishake filter provided in VS10 Plus (beta).

Ulead's filter does a better job then ArcSoft. However the motorcycle clip there is no correcting it. There is only so much a filter/plugin can do.

Don't expect Ulead's antishake filter to work miracles, it will not. However it is one of the better filters available. It also focuses on the center of the frame. You have the ability to keyframe, however the keyframing does not work correctly. Ulead is aware of this, and should be working on a fix...

As I said, SteadyHand did a reasonable job of this but none of the others. I have a few other test clips that I use. Where there are different planes in the frame, parallax sets in and a compromise becomes necessary. Unfortunately, none of the systems I've tested allows one to choose the important plane, so it's pot luck whether the plane you want has been steadied (most often not :( )
