Sound problem when capturing video

Post by Lisa »

Thanks to your advice (a few days ago) I'm now using a cable (firewire included in the computer) instead of my Instant video mpx. I've tried all formats available to capture the video from my camera. All except one (WMV) give very bad results : it's slower than the original video.

So I decided I would use the WMV format, BUT the problem in this format is the sound : there's a horrible sound in the background, a bit like a helicopter !

Hi Lisa,

Could you please complete your system information in your profile? It will certainly help in this case, and will be there if problems arise in the future.

I have also had this problem trying to capture to WMV. I wasn't able to narrow down what was causing it. The noise I had sounded more like mike feedback, not a squeal, but a low pitch hum. I'm thinking it has something to do with my onboard/integrated sound. I was just trying out capturing to that format, so when it didn't work, I abandoned it. I only like capturing to DV-AVI anyway...

I think the problem you are both experiencing may be the sound of the camcorder motor. The only cure would be to use an external microphone but only the more expensive camcorders would support this.

Yes that is quite possible Steve, however I don't get the noise when capturing to any other format, primarily DV-AVI, just WMV. Personally it doesn't bother me, because I will capture to DV-AVI on every occassion anyway..

Well of course it *shouldn't* be a problem because you shouldn't *NEED* to capture as .wmv.

You should be able to capture as DV-AVI using your firewire Lisa - if the quality is not to good then perhaps you have an incorrect setting somewhere - although I am still concerned that something is not quite right with your computer in view of your previous inability to capture or read a CD in your disk drive.

Could you please read the first post ONLY in this thread :-
http://phpbb.ulead.com.tw/EN/viewtopic.php?t=27

but note that as you are using PAL then your capture settings should be :-

PAL (25 fps)
Microsoft AVI files
24 Bits, 720 x 576, 4:3, 25 fps
Lower Field First
DV Video Encoder -- type 1
DV Audio -- PAL, 44.100 kHz, 16 Bit, Stereo

Thanks, I will check all the settings (... headache, but I'll survive thanks to YOU).
Brian, the only CD I couldn't read was the one used to install the Instant video mpx. Someone told me this device was "interfering" with something else I have recently installed, probably the Logitec webcam... I'm not going to check this out now and I'll concentrate on the video problems !
Probably more stupid questions later... :P

Please don't think like that Lisa - I wouldn't go as far as some people and say "there are no stupid questions" - but I don't think any of us have considered any of your questions so far stupid - The only aim for most of the regulars on here is to help you enjoy UVS in the way we do - if you need to ask questions please feel free - besides if I wasn't here answering questions I might have to go and talk to my wife !!!!!

The probable reason you are not able to capture correctly in DV/AVI format is because, on installation, Video Studio, for some strange and silly reason, defaults to Type 2 DV Encoder (which captures video and audio in separate streams), instead of Type 1 (which captures them in one stream). Type 2 DV is used mainly by people more at the professional end of the spectrum. There are also some programs out there (though mainly fairly specialised ones) that will only work with Type 2. The downside to Type 2, though, is that it requires fairly powerful computer resources to work properly. And if your computer is not up to the job, then the result will usually be jumpy video and/or audio. To check what Type you are using, go to the Capture page of Video Studio, select DV as the format, and click on the Options cogwheel icon about a third the way down the left hand side of screen. If it is Type 2, then change it to Type 1 and try capturing again. If that doesn't work, then I think the problem could be a more serious, and probably hardware-related, one.

Wonderful, it worked ! I changed to dvd 1 and I was able to capture in AVI without any problem !!! Thank you so much for the advice.

Now I'm trying to add music to some parts of the video, extracts of music, for 30 seconds or a few minutes here and there. It works but the sound is too loud and I cannot adjust it (I would like it to be more a background music). I know where it is but everytime I click on it to take the sound down, everything stops.
Also I played the video even if the sound was too loud, I just wanted to see what it was like. Well, after the music, the sound doesn't come back, I mean, the sounds that are normally after the music extract, the "normal sound" of the video. There's just complete silence...

If your added audio is in mp3 format, you need to be aware that some people have had problems when adding mp3 files produced with certain codecs (notably Lame, which is used for instance in Nero). If you convert the mp3 to .WAV format, the problem is usually resolved. Again, if you have Nero, you can use Wave Editor to do the conversion. Otherwise, you can download a free program called Audacity which you can find in the freebies links on the Ulead General Discussion Board: http://phpbb.ulead.com.tw/EN/viewtopic.php?t=12931

Ooops... A lot of names I'd never heard before ...
I just inserted a cd and played it, then clicked to record the track on the video. Actually it worked ! It's just my inability to adjust the sound (and to recover the video sound afterwards).
Thanks anyway
