hard drive
No it's set up as just another external device useing usb 2.0 and shows it as drive E. If I go to windows explorer it shows it there and I can write to it. but when I go into video studio 9 to capture video and click on File then prefrence and go to working folder and to change it from a folder in C:\ to a folder in E:\ ( new hard drive ) it doesnt see it. And if I click on the browser it only shows my internal hard drive. The help file says that if you use another hard drive to make sure that vs9 program is on c:\ hard drive and it is..

I'm not sure. All my hard drives are internal. As a test, I plugged in my USB key which is recognized as drive E:. I opened Ulead and it is there in the list of drive I can capture to. Hopefully someone has run into this before and can help you. Have you searched the forum?

Can we assume that you have the external drive connected and the power pack for it is working when you try to set it as the Working Folder in VS? (I have two external hard drives connected via USB 2.0 and both show up in VS8 and 9. But of course, only when they are connected and the power switched on to them...! And I didn't do anything special when I originally connected them. Win XP Pro SP2 simply went through its normal thing of detecting new hardware, and then telling me that they were set up and ready to be used. After that, VS recognised and could use them without trouble.)

I have been experimenting recently with external hard drives and brought a couple of external hard drive cases. They can connect to the computer by way of USB2 and also IEEE1394.
I have several Hard Drives, currently there are 3 connected to my IDE slots (Slot 4 is used by my DVD writer) and as I type this I am looking at a further 4 sitting on top of my computer desk, though I have a few more stashed away in the house.
I have found that when you place a heavy load on an external hard drive it often loses its connection with the computer. They are totally unreliable for video work as video work is very hard drive intensive. DV AVI files consume 13GB of Hard Drive space per hours worth of video.
Quite simply the external drives are not up to it. those same external drives connected to my computers IDE cables have no problems whatsoever.
I have used different cables and also scoured the internet and found various registry tweaks, nothing makes any difference. External drives are simply not up to it.
My best advice is to get hold of Hard Drive Caddies
This sort of thing

You place your IDE hard drive into one of these cases which then slides into a carrier. the carrier fits into one of the slots on the front of your computer - just like your CD/DVD drive. Most are held in place with a key.
The IDE cables from your motherboard connect to the back of the carrier.
Sliding the caddy into the carrier connect your hard drive to the IDE cable. You can therefore simply turn off your computer, slide out the caddy, slide in another caddy with another hard drive and turn the computer back on.
Using this method you can have different hard drives set up with different Operating systems Windows XP / 98 / ME / 2000 Linux etc.
Great system for back ups, storage and all sorts.

Thankyou for the imput on external drives. It doesnt help me much now since I already paid for it. The problem is I can get ulead videostudio 9 to see it as a place to save video that I down load off my camera but I can save to the external drive in studio 9.

Matt,
When VideoStudio is working properly.
You should be able to see all the drives the same as explorer see's them.
USB drives, Firewire Drives & even network drives.
When you assign the working folder you probably need to naviagate back to
the Root of the system drives.
IF you are browsing correctly to assign the working folder then either your VS installation is corrupted or your windows configuration is corrupted.
Before starting VS open up explorer so you can see/read & write to the external drive but stay at the top Root of the drive. Don't lock any sub-directories.
Then minimize that window. With an explorer window minimized then start VS and give it a whirl.
You should also be plugging the drive into it's own usb 2.0 port and not one of the cheap usb hubs that can give problems.

Well there's two different way to see it.
You can in VS9 Prefrences select any folder for PREVIEW files by using browse, including USB drives.
BUT you can't select any other than real flat-cable-plugged drives in the Hard Disk: pull-down list below for general usage.
At least on my three very different machines, it does it this way.

Re: Hard Drive
I just went to the capture and set the drive to my USB key and it worked. I wouldn't be able to capture very much, mind you.matt pacchetti wrote:Hey Guy when you plugged in you usb key and then went to ulead to see your list of drives where did you go to look and the list of drives. On my installations I can see and assign everthing, even networked drives. External USB, Firewire etc.
It sounds more like a windows configuration issue.
I also have what steve suggested:
The drives "Caddys" are the way to go for video. They aren't expensive.
You can get them in EIDE(parallel) or SATA configurations (compusa).
