Capture Driver

Post by beswift »

Recently I bought a Movie Factory 4 in a retail store. I loaded it, but I get an error message when I try to capture from my Canon Camcorder ZR600. It states that the capture driver can't be found. I'm new to Unlead, but not new to computers. What gives? :?:

Try the user manual in the box and find the DV capture section....

Not compatible

Post by beswift »

Actually, I have the manual and would definitely have checked it before posting here. I just looked at a compatibility list dated last May for MF Vs. 4 and my Camcorder which was introduced in '06 isn't on the list. I e-mailed Ulead with no response yet. I'm kind of angry as I went to a Computer store with the idea that the sales person would be able to help me find the right product. Then I discover there's a new version out with upgrades when I go to register the product. I'm definitely returning this to Comp USA with complaints.

My experience of computer stores is that as soon as you ask a couple of questions the sales guy has to disappear into the back of the shop, no doubt to ring up his Tech support guys!!

No argument here.

You got it. Not that this is going to help me, but I went back to the store today. I was offered store credit for my software, but no answer to the question. There was a serious resistance to my desire for cash back as well. The fact would be that they want to keep the cash and bore you with their answers. Since their answers don't adress the actual question, they're useless. Now, how can I optain the proper driver for my camcorder? Even the reply from Ulead didn't make that clear.

You need to tell us how you are attempting to import your video files into the computer. The recommended method is to connect your camcorder to the computer with an IEEE1394 (firewire / i-Link) cable.

Import Connection.

Although I fail to see why I have to mention it, I will let you know that of course I have a firewire and proper IEEE 1394 card. I checked the compatibility list on the Ulead website for MF and my camcorder isn't on it. The error message I receive states that there is no capture driver. I got anonymous instructions from Ulead which ran >>In the capture window, click on the Advance Settings > Change Capture Plugin.

Select "Ulead DirectShow Plugin" from the list then click OK. << However, the software doesn't allow me to do this. I can't find the Change Capture Plugin or the Advanced Settings tab. Are they referring to MF Version 4 (because that's what I have)? I appreciate the help. don't I need a Capture Driver specific to my Camcorder?

Your capture driver is included in the operating system if you have Windows XP/2000.

If the camera and firewrie are working properly you should be able to see the device in the device manager as a Imaging device. You should get some indication on the bottom right of desktop window, there should be something that looks like a video camera. If you don't get the camera Icon then something is not working properly. Could be the camera, firewire cable or the firewire card.
Once the computer installs the device properly you should be able to use it in Movie Factory.

I thought you took the software back?????

All ulead products, MovieFactory, VideoStudio etc.
All other video editors: Adobe, Sony_Vegas, MyDVD, Nero Vision
work with the "Canon" Firewire interface ports.
You don't need a firewire driver for XP. With win2000 make sure to have at least Service_Pack 4 installed. The drivers are built into the operating system. If you forced a driver to install then you need to restore the correct operating system driver.

Many of the newer Canon DV Camcorders supply a driver to Capture via the USB2 port on the camcorder using the new usb2e spec's. This is to capture full DV material from the tape. You don't need that driver, it's only for the USB port on the camcorder. Always best to use the Firewire port.
(Never connect the usb cable and the firewire cable at the same time).

Software Return

Post by beswift »

They wouldn't give me my money back. Store policy: all sales are final for software. I'm sorry about being confusing. I kept the software, refused to take the offer of store credit and walked out in a huff. Now I think I might have a problem with the Cardbus which is a USB2.0+IEEE1384 Combo. There are three ports so I'll start by checking each one. Thanks.

For how to capture DV video into your computer, check p.30 in the user manual, "Capture DV video" section.

After you turn on the DV camcorder, switch the DV cam to VCR mode and connect the DV cam with the IEEE-1394 port. Then start DVDMF and invoke the Capture Video module by following the instructions in the manual. When you see the Capture Video dialog box, clicks on the down arraow to see more settings. Clicks on Advanced Settings and select Select Device Control, then change the device control setting to MS-1394 and then clicks on OK (if it says no device found then open the Select Device Control DB again and change the device control to TI-1394) and try to capture your DV video.

Hope this helps.

Hi,
For your information the Adaptec Card that has USB 2 & firewire uses
about 4 more interrupts.
Installing that card in a system that has usb 2 ports on the MB can cause
interrupt conflicts because of the 2 different usb controllers. It can work but
can also have interrupt problems.
Usually those cards are installed into a MB that doesn't have usb 2 or firewire.

I've been using the Adaptec 3 port firewire card without problems.
Usually never a problem with the 3 port adaptec cards. They are a few dollars more but do seem to be reliable.

Without anything running if you turn the camcorder on then windows should say found new hardware etc.
The camcorder should showup under cameras & scanners. If windows can't communicate with the device then none of the programs will work.
Make sure to have the camcorder in the Playback (VTR) mode.

The plugin for VS is the "DirectShow" plugin and when you first start make sure to choose DV as the recording format. If you choose Mpeg or DVD then that is a conversion feature of VS to convert "On the Fly" from DV to Mpeg2 format. May or may not work on your system.
After you choose the correct plugin goto "Device Settings" in that screen the name of the camcorder should be displayed (if available throught the windows DirectX directshow interface driver).

I've had some firewire cards that do not work well. Expecially with the VIA chipsets on them.

Hope this helps,

Yes, firewire card compatibility is also an issue on capturing DV video.
