VS9 won't let me set capture properties

Post by uleadme »

Hi,

I'm still fairly near the base camp of the learning curving of video editing on VS9.

My latest hitch is that VS9 won't let me set the capture properties when capturing from my panasonic camcorder. Yes, VS9 seems to capture my footage pretty well, but it won't let me manaully set the capture properties in the capture options dialog box because all the options are blanked out except the capture to library option. Thus, for example it won't let me set the capture frame rate (although, for all I know it still might be capturing at a high frame rate which is what I want).

My question is why are these options blanked out. I've read the manuall carefully, and I have made sure that I have not selected "allow access to capture devices's settings" in the preferences dialog box under the file menu (p. 166 manual). What else could be causing this? Is it some glitch in communication between my camcorder and VS9, or something else? For information's sake, I am capturing DV AVI type 1, though I note, it still does the same thing when select type 2.

Some of the capture properties are greyed out because they are "not negotiable" when capturing to DV AVI.
The example of the frame rate is one of them. If your cam records PAL then the frame rate is 25fps, if it it NTSC then it is 29.97, you can't change that and really shouldn't.

Thanks, that seems pretty clear. I was just trying to follow the recommended procedures set out in the sticky, which says you should set the capture frame rate, but it seems I don't have to.

Yes, VS will be detecting most of the properties by itself, it should detect the frame rate and the field order automatically and I don't recall any posts of anyone having any problem with VS in this area. Similarly the bitrate is fixed for DV AVI and would only become an issue if you are capturing to MPEG and converting on the fly, which is not such a great idea in most circumstances anyway.
