Error Message

Post by alison »

Hi, I am using PI 8 and cannot open any images either as an attachment to an email or from my hard drive. Whenver I try, I get an error message that says ox76992156 referenced memory at oxfffffffff. The memory cannot be read. I have cleaned out my temp folders, done virus, spy scans, installed plenty of additional memory and I just can't figure this out. Does anyone know what the problem could be? I have had this problem before and cleaning out my temp folders did the trick-not this time.I am very frustrated. Thanks in advance!

Firstly you need to complete your system specifications on your profile page.
Then I wouldn't need to ask what operating system you are using.

This is a windows error message.
If you are using Windows XP then enter the following into the
START | RUN dialog box
%SystemRoot%\system32\eventvwr.msc /s
and press enter.
Now check the following two folders
Application
System

You will find a red circle witha white cross inside. Double click to open it and there you will find a link
http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp.
This link alsoi contains some hidden code apertaining to your error.
Double click and you will then be given more detailed information and possible cures.

Thank you for that info Steve. Although my specific problem was not listed anywhere, it does give me a very good starting point-I didn't even know that log existed. Good to know!

Alison,

Interesting problem. You cleaned out the temp folders but did you also clean out the Cookies and History folders?

If not, got to the Control Panel and open the icon named Internet Options. On the dialog box, click the Buttons named Delete Cookies, Delete Files, and Clear History. Then click the Settings button and open the Settings dialog box.

Under Temporary Internet files folder, make sure the location is C:\Documents and Settings/(your name here)/Local Settings/Temporary Internet Files/, if not then you can click the button named Move Folder and move the folder back into its original location. If this has happened note the old folder location and clean out the contents, but do not delete the folders. Also, in Settings/Amount of disc space to use: make sure your setting is 300 to 400 megabytes.

Click on the button named View Files and make sure the contents are empty. Also click on the button named View Objects which will list the programs that are installed and used by IE. Should be programs like Flash and so on. If there is something that does not look right, scan this folder with your Anti-virus and Spy ware again.

Clean out your Send To folder, and if you have any files you want to keep save them in the *.txt format somewhere else on the hard drive.

Once you have done all of that, try defragging your hard drive at least three times.

If none of the above works then you probably have a program interfering or a broken registry key, and that means Steve’s suggestion is the only avenue. In that case read about Dr Watson on the Hep menu a Win XP diagnostic program.

Thank you for your help-I tried all that, but nothing-so I bit the bullet and called Microsoft. Turns out that the automatic updates I get from Micrsoft is conflicting with Ulead and also HP software. I also have 2 Ulead corrupt files that I need to rename. They are recommending that I reinstall PI Pro 8.5 or upgrade because the problems have not been reported in 10 & 11. They say I should uninstall my HP printer & reinstall as well. I think I will just try upgrading the PI and I think I will also stop getting Windows automatic updates. I never had any problems before I set that up. So-is PI 8 the same as PI Pro 8.5 and how is PI 11? Thanks both for your help-really appreciate it!

Sorry about that! Can you tell us what the two corrupt file names are? It might be helpful to others having a similar problem?

Some like PI 10 better and I for one like PI 11 better. It is a judgement call. However, since you are going to upgrade you might as well get the latest package. Personally, I have not had any trouble of significance with PI 11. Of course now that I have said that!?! Murphy's Law!!!

Best of Luck

Please don't apologize-I appreciate the effort. Sure-the 2 corrupt files are pidm_browse.dll and u32cfg.dll. They told me to rename or delete. When I upgrade, the correct files will replace. This problem has been reported in 8 and below. Can you tell me what the difference is between the regular PI and the Pro-I have PI Pro 8.5 and see that I can purchase the 10.5 Pro on the NOVA website but don't see an upgrade option. When I go to Ulead's website I see PI 10, 11-but it is a not pro. Not sure if I can upgrade from a pro 8.5 to a PI 11. Appreciate all the help!

steve or htchien could give you a better answer on this subject.

I can say that they are not the exact same product. If you bought from Nova you want to upgrade from them. If you bought from Ulead, you want to upgrade with their product. Ulead does not offer an upgrade from Nova, but Nova does offer a competitive upgrade from Ulead.

I have always had Ulead, so do not know the Nova product and therefore can’t give you a recommendation.

Thank you Steve for those links-that cleared up alot for me. Thank you Ron for that link. I have disabled my automatic updates from Microsoft so that I am notified first. Really burns me because everything was working fine until I had that set up-no more than 2 months ago. My HP printer is working sooo far. I guess if you want the security you're going to have some problems. Thanks all!
