Firstly Please place your system details into the fields provided on your profile page.
Then you need to tell us how you are connecting your devices to the computer in order to import the video files. eg. IEEE1394 firewire cable, USB Lead etc.
Please include any settings involved such as file type and compression settings. Eg. DV Type 1, MPEG2, DivX etc. What bit rates and audio settings you have set.

I have no idea what the solution is... but I'll bet there's a problem with your source files. If you "feed it" a known-good AVI/DV or MPEG-2 file, it should work fine.
VideoStudio seems to have trouble importing some DVDs, from some DVD recorders. I don't know what it "thinks" is wrong with these. (I assume your DVD is from a stand-alone recorder.)
I've never tried an ecnrypted commercial DVD, but I suspect you get a clean warning or error... I wouldn't expect a crash or lock-up.
Ulead may also have trouble decrypted commercial DVDs. In that case, it may be other "junk" embedded in the MPEG... subtitles, alternate angles, alternate sountracks, etc...
