4:3 miniDV, video studio records in 16:9

Post by Duif »

Hi,
How do i change the settings in Videostudio 9 so that the mini dv i capture and was recorded in reg mode, 4:3, is not recorded in widescreen 16:9.
It says in recording options that i am recording in DVD NTSC 16:9, but no where to change that.
and while recording, the info below says that i am recording in widescreen, can't see an option anywhere to turn it off.
On the Canon Elura 100 camera screen is it is normal mode.
Please help. Wife says she doesn't need to look that wide :-)

When you open VideoStudio do you have the "Start up screen" enabled?
This has 3 options
Dv-DVWizard
Movie wizard
VideoStudio Editor
(If not you can enable it from: File | Preferences | Show startup screen)

At the top right of this screen is a toggle option between 16.9 / 4.3
When 16.9 is selected it will display in orange. when unselected (ie 4.3 mode) it is in blue.

See if this makes any difference.

Hi Steve,
just checked, it is unselected, which means it should be in 4:3 mode.

Hey Steve again,
this is wierd, but checkmarked it as if i was doing widescreen, and now it tapes normally in 4:3, so it is backwards, wierd. but so far it works.

ok, posted way to quickly that switching it over made a difference.
While transferring, it shows up in the preview screen as 4:3, so i thought the prob was over. but after letting the tape run all the way, and viewing it just now, it is back to 16:9.
Did a quick test, check marking the 16:9 and unchecking it, running 10 sec of tape either way, and viewing is normal screen, once captured it is widescreen.
the info that is displayed below says it is capturing it in widescreen.
Even though my camcorder is capable of widescreen, i think it would have nothing to do with it, since in the LCD screen it show up as normal, same as when it is capturing.
So please help again!

Hi Josh

How are you capturing your video?
Have you been successful in capturing video before?

You should be connecting via firewire and selecting DV as the capture ‘format’.

This process copies the video from your camera.

If you captured 4:3 then the preview screen should be full.
If you captured 16:9 then you will see a black border top and bottom only.
In both cases the frame should be ok and NOT distorted.

If you right click on a clip in the timeline and select properties, what are they?

Change the Project Properties to match this aspect ratio.
Does this help?

Is the wife still looking a bit overweight?

How are you capturing your video? WITH FIREWIRE
Have you been successful in capturing video before? YES

You should be connecting via firewire and selecting DV as the capture ‘format’. I AM

This process copies the video from your camera.

If you captured 4:3 then the preview screen should be full. IT IS NOT
If you captured 16:9 then you will see a black border top and bottom only. IT DOES
In both cases the frame should be ok and NOT distorted.

If you right click on a clip in the timeline and select properties, what are they? SAYS WIDESCREEN, AND CAN'T FIGURE OUT HOW TO UNSELECT THAT

Change the Project Properties to match this aspect ratio.
Does this help?

Is the wife still looking a bit overweight? YES, AND AT 125LBS, SHE IS MAD THAT SHE LOOKS 160LBS

Just to satisfy my curiosity, please capture your footage from the camcorder to your computer, using the same firewire leads as at present, but using Windows Movie Maker. I see you have Windows XP and you will find that it is installed on your system as it is a part of XP.

if you can't find its shortcut, then
START | Run | C:\Program Files\Movie Maker\moviemk.exe

Does this capture come out 4.3 or 16.9?

Hi Duif

I have just run a short test.

I think your camera may have been used to record 16:9, then subsequently used for 4:3.
The first few frames still being 16:9 tells VS to capture to 16:9 even though the remaining footage is 4:3. If that makes sense.

Using my camera I recorder 20 seconds of 16:9 footage, I then recorder a further 20 seconds at 4:3.

I captured the 40 seconds to Dv-Avi. Which showed the first 20 as ok whilst the 4:3 was stretched to fit 16:9.

When I captured again using the ’Split By Scene’ option VS seems to capture in both aspect ratios. 16:9 and 4:3. This allowed me to change the project properties to 4:3 , everything looked ok.

Either:-

Wind your tape away from the first few frames and capture again
Or
Try capturing again using the ‘Split By Scene’ option. ( I would be interested in these results)
