URL,
To find where that video file is actually located you need to make some changes to the default windows settings used for browsing.
Open up an explorer window by clicking or launching "My Computer"
On the top menu:
Goto "Tools" -> "Folder Options"
Under "Folder Options" click on "View" Tab
You need to activate more viewing features:
Scroll down and make these changes:
Display file size informatiion = ON
Display simple folder view = OFF
Display the full path in the address bar = ON
Display the full path in the title bar = ON
Click on "OK" to make the additions to the explorer browser.
Then open up "My Computer"
Click on the "My Videos" icon that will point to and you can see and play your video.
The next window/folder that comes up will display the exact location of where that video file is located.
Look at the very top of the explorer box and at the "TITLE BAR" (usually blue) or in the address box if you have the address box actively displayed.
The exact location will be in the "TITLE BAR" because you activated that feature in the previous steps.
Hope this helps,
MD

seems like a waste of a TV card when all you have to do is connect an aerial to it and your computer doubles up as a television with teletext and also recording facilties.
Open Movie Factory
Start New project
Click the NEXT button
Second icon in at the top (Add Media) Add video files (Or press Alt-V)
Navigate to your video file (According to your last post its in the root directory so if its called whatitsname.avi it will be located at C:\whatsitsname.avi)
Now it should appear as a thumbnail at the bottom of the screen.
Once you have a working Hauppauge TV card it shouldn't need patches or updates.
You still have not completed your system details on your profile page.
when you have done so your details will pop up when I click the "System" button below your name.

Steve, yes it has worked and no I haven't updated my profile yet, but I will as soon as I get this project over.
And truly great!!!! Sole thankyou to your ongoing advice and persistence of which I am very ingratiated. Your Tutorial also worked in the similar method that I used Movie Factory 3 when I first purchased the unit back last fall and that app came with the unit.
You said once installed to my Hauppauge that these new drivers , apps etc for my Hauppauge pvr-usb 2 bought last september will unlikely need change. So do you believe that the unit should now be stable for the remainder of the time I will use it? ( I qualify that by saying as long as my OS is "xp" or will this complicated D/L of drivers and apps from the Hauppauge site occur again and again???
As if I don't work with the unit for say 3 months in spite of the fact that I now have the whole MF 4 process documented in my Journal, thanks to your great tutorial, I am concerned that I might start on a project and be shocked to find that the process does not work methodically just like this one did as well as the one I did in the fall.
And finally, I guess I have to keep checking the Hauppauge support site for updated drivers, apps etc however for the $200+ cdn that I paid for the unit and registered it, I would think that the co. could at least email if I have to update the drivers, apps etc.
Lastly I ask where I can find a Tutorial on Hauppauge to know what to do with the settings etc. as this captured video was done before I uninstalled the Hauppauge Install proggy and cleared it out with the Hauppauge clear program and now i don't know if i have ruined what i set up originally.
The better half just went out and purchased Pinnacle 500 for the spare computer as we were so frustrated with what has gone on here but were harkened to hear you say that this should be the last of the new D/L setups required to make Hauppauge operate properly.
Should we then D/L the set ups and save them to a floppy or
CD. As you can see by my question we are truly noob's at this.
The CD that came with the Hauppauge unit will not auto install and so I talked to the store about it and they didn't realize this, so I will call Hauppauge after the Easter Holiday and find out. The store offered me a new Hauppauge unit, however perhaps it has the old software that will not launch either which will be the same dilemma as this unit, this I will have to find out from Hauppauge Tech Support in New York next week.
As far as Movie Factory is concerned, does Ulead come out with a lot of patches.
Vers 4 meets our needs, to simply transfer from VHS to DVD is there any reason that we may need to patch or upgrade to a newer version of MF?? We are not into editing or adding music etc.
Thankyou once again for all of your help and I would appreciate your comments on all of the above and also on Pinnacle which the better half will have to play with for 15 days before a return for full refund.
And finally I guess I should act on what Hauppauge has to say about the PVR-USB 2's in the stores now and whether the CD actually works when you put it in to do the install.
Best regards for the Easter Season, and egg hunting and Low Carbs!!!
I look forward to comments again
( you will make my grandchildren thrilled for Easter Sunday at 6 PM!!! Better than all the Candy and Chocolate!!)
And all of your help, all documented reinforced that I do know that I am up for challenges and don't have to go out and purchase a dvd recorder as was suggested by a prior poster, I believe he was the Mad Drummer.
I respected his comments, however believed in forum help and my ability to follow instuctions until the successful end.
Sincerest regards for the time you spent. me>>>>

The instructions for installing the Hauppauge TV card are here:
http://www.hauppauge.co.uk/pages/suppor ... rusb2.html
My Tutorial mentioned earlier also describes how to capture video using WinTV2000 which is the software that should be installed alongside your hauppauge TV card to "turn your computer into a TV" complete with recording facilities. In fact it turns you computer into a TV/VCR and you can dump your old VHS recorder.
It is always a wise decision to save downloaded files onto discs.

Yes, thankyou these are all the updates that I have installed. But I still don't understand how I can toss out the VCR with the programs that come with the vcr??
How will i get them onto the computer without using the VCR, remember I am not Using the TV Tuner at all. I don't watch tv with this Hauppauge Nor do I copy from it.
I simply playback from my VCR and capture and create a DVD.
Am I missing something here with respect to the Hauppauge program or did you think I was creating a dvd from a TV program?
Thankyou.

No what I am getting at is that if at some future date you move all your existing stuff from VHS onto DVD you could if you wanted use your computer to record TV programs in the same way as your VHS recorder.
I don't mean go out and throw it away straight away. You still need it to get your exisiting stuff onto DVD (That's if you want to of course)
I did and the only VHS player in our house is one I have connected to the computer just for the odd VHS tape that a friend/relative may ask me to convert for them.
Try plugging your TV coaxial cable into the hauppauge card and you will see what I mean, it turns your computer into a TV set and it includes the ability to record TV programs onto your hard drive.
Its sort of like a Sky+ box

Yes, I know what you are saying, but I don't want to record any tv programs to my computer nor watch them.
What I need to do, if I understand you properly is transfer my vhs most likely onto my external HD and then create individual dvd's?
Correct?
Also second question again is about the Pinnacle Studio 500 usb 2 that has the program Pinnacle Studio 10.
I can't seem to find out too much googling on this unit.
I want to set it up on my other notebook as it does not have all of the bells and whistles of tv tuner which I don't need.
I wanted to know if this is a stable unit as I saw some bad comments about the software Pinnacle Studio 10 and all the patches it needed when it was released and these were Immediate patches.(released too prematurely??? also I understand that Pinnacle bought out Dazzle??)
All I want is a User Friendly Capture and Create Dvd unit and software for my other notebook (usb hookup) and no tv tuner and this is all that is available in Canada and it looks like I can't just hit a button like on Hauppauge and Movie Factory 4, I have to drag n drop.
I really would appreciate your experienced comments again on the above.
Thankyou,
The grand children loved their Easter present, it was hidden in the main basket of boiled Easter eggs tucked away in an inconspicuous spot in an old yellow cedar tree that has been on our property for Generations.
Again, thankyou for your patience and persistence.
All of this is documented and tabbed in my journal on video/dvd conversion.

I have Several Hard Drives, more than I can connect to my computer at once and some have to sit in my computer drawer. I have tinkered about with external Hard Drives and have some external drive cases that connect by way of IEEE1394 and also USB2. Without going into too much detail basically I wouldn’t trust an external Hard Drive for any video related work. My experience of external drives is that they can suddenly disappear from Windows Explorer especially when handling a heavy load. What I need to do, if I understand you properly is transfer my vhs most likely onto my external HD and then create individual dvd's?
Correct?
I always restrict my video work to internal Hard Drives.
