Problem with video in my video files and Movie Fact. 4??

Post by url »

Hi, I have a captured mpg video on my hard drive in "my videos" and I have played it back and so I know that it is there, however I am unable to burn it to a dvd.

The vhs video was captured by my Hauppauge which I have been very satisfied with. I purchased it before Christmas 2005 and was doing several transfers to DVD with the ULead Movie Factory 3 that came with it and they all turned out well.
Then I purchased the Movie Factory 4 and never did use it.

Today I went to use it and went to create a DVD and got to the part where it asks where you want to look for the video and I click on My Computer as the file is in "My Videos" and Look in "My Videos" is shown and the movie is shown there as mpg and I had previously viewed a portion of it.
However it keeps saying there is no video files present and it shows in excess of 1 million ( i'm not a techie and i can't remember what the measurement of the units is)
I apologize for my ignorance of terms etc. however I don't use the Hauppauge unit enough and my notes I made were from the program that came with the unit Ulead Movie Factory 3.
So I decided I would go back to the old program as I felt i could use my notes to convert the video to dvd with the version 3, however when I clicked on the icon I got a warniing message of a problem with "launcher.exe" and it was removed so that nothing would damage my computer????
I could not understand why my version 3 of the program would not work as it had worked fine before. And now the error appears for an instant on the screen and reads as I indicated above and the Icon for Movie Factory 3 simply will not work.
I even tried redownloading it as I still have the original disk that came with my Hauppauge unit and I still got the same error and so I have to use the Movie Factory 4 but as I said earlier the program is not recognizing the video that is in "My videos" file which I was able to play and view. And I have never used this version before and I felt capable of using the Movie Factory 3 and now it is not available to use for whatever reason. I don't understand why version 4 works and version 3 gets stopped.
I really hope that someone can help as I was trying to do an Easter gift for one of my young ones.
I apologize for what might seem a silly question.
All comments would be appreciated, Thankyou

Hi,
It sounds llke you haven't installed any of the patches. Go to the ulead website and download the latest updates to MF4 and install them. Then reboot the machine.

You say the video is under "My Videos".
To access "My Videos" you need to click on the "My Documents" Icon.
Then the "My Videos" icon will show up. You don't want "My Computer" because then you have to naviagate all the way down through a few directories.

Instead of using the Wizard it might be easier to use the regular interface and import the video, create chapters, a menu and burn a dvd.

Hope this helps,

Thx for the reply i didn't realize that there would be patches for the program,>>> me.
I will follow your instructions and D/L any patches, however I am such a knucklehead when it comes to doing the latter that you are suggesting. I am not sure what you mean by instead of navigating....."
I was doing fine before Christmas and I should have tried out the Movie Factory 4 after I purchased it however I had a project at work that took precedent over my new hobby and now I am back to struggling.
I really appreciate your comments. It is an old (transferred from my old sony camera hi 8) family video that I want to give one of my grand children for Easter instead of a lot of candy.
I'm going for the patches right now and I hope that you might comment on your easier method that you mentioned as I am not doing any editing etc.
I certainly am not at that level, perhaps one day when I have more time to pursue this interest.
Thankyou and I hope that you have some time for more comments.
Cheers and Regards, >>> Noob

I was going to say that I had no problems doing this process with the Movie Factory 3 that came with my Hauppauge and did probably close to 20 dvds before Christmas and that is why I thought that I would continue using this method.
I don't know anything about menu, chapters etc. as you mentioned. It sounds more complicated than when I was trying to Create Dvd.
But when your new, everything sounds complicated :!: :?:

Hi,
>>>I really appreciate your comments. It is an old (transferred from my old sony camera hi Cool family video that I want to give one of my grand children for Easter instead of a lot of candy. >>>I certainly am not at that level, perhaps one day when I have more time to pursue this interest. Thankyou and I hope that you have some time for more comments.

A few weeks ago we had a family thing going. The wrestler who did very good up to the state tournaments had everything on their dv camcorder. They wanted to make a dvd.
I put a DVD-R into the "Panasonic Dvd Recorder". Turned on the camcorder etc. hit "Record". There was about 45 minutes of different matches on the camcorder. After I finalized the dvd I then made 2 more copies on the computer for them. Burning each copy at 4X and verifying the burn using Nero or Ulead. That took about an 1 1/2 hours because of burning the extra 2 dvd's. This gave them 3 dvd's. the original took 45 minutes to record and about 4-5 minutes to finalize.

You need results before Easter correct?
The "Panasonic DMR-E20" Dvd Recorder unit has Dv input and analog inputs. It's an upgrade to it's the earlier version.

That would be my advice because you work alot. Nice to have fast results, plus you will enjoy the investment.
When you have time from working what you do later is put one of the dvd's that was recorded in the dvd recorder into the computer and import the videos into the computer. Then you can sort and edit them, make custom menus and burn custom dvd's.
If you buy a recorder on Friday you will be done on Friday with the video. Most places also have a 30day return policy.

Hope this helps,

Thx for the reply and your time. I installed the patches and did a reboot just in case.
Then I went to the Movie Factory 4 file and error "A key error" popped up. I clicked on OK and closed the window and then the Movie Factory horizontal blue blocks travelled across the screen and the Window to Create Dvd etc. opened up and I clicked on it and did what you suggested and went to My Documents. Then to My Videos and it was empty!!!

So then I went to what I had explained before and clicked on My Computer and to my C drive and to My Videos and the video was there 1.18 GB, now this is what I also don't understand, the Video plays with Windows Media Player but when in Movie Factory 4 it will not Open because there is nothing in My Videos in My Documents.

Again here I am>>> where has the video gone to????

It's there in My Computer but not in My Documents.
I would prefer to burn it on my burner as I am off until next Tuesday and hope that by Easter Sunday I should have figured this out.
Besides I usually am reasonablycapable of catching onto a program and then document the use of it.

That is why I wanted to use the Movie Factory 3 that came with my Hauppauge unit as I have the process there. But the Icon for Movie Factory advises that a "launcher.exe" threat has been stopped and the Icon does not work.
Even as I mentioned after I did an uninstall cleaned the reg and did a new install from the Hauppauge original disk with the MF 3 on it.

I thought I would report back my results and perhaps this may shed more light on what the issue is. BTW the reason that I also want to burn this DVD on my BenQ external burner is b/c it has the Book Management dvd rom exe that I use so that my DVD's play in anyones player ...hi end units, door crasher specials and middle of the road types like our toshiba. I want to be able to use this for other gifts that I have used this program Movie Factory and my Hauppauge unit with and had no problems. 9 family members players all were able to read the dvds; unlike my son's LG burner and his gift of dvds backups. We all have been video camera buffs over the years and copied the hi 8's to vhs format and thus have quite a library. For me, it goes back to when the vhs format relic cameras first came out.
BTW, if the video files I find in the C drive "My Videos" are playable, is there a way to export them somewhere so that Movie Factory will see them, except I still have that key?? error after I did the D/L of my patches.
Thankyou, and again best regards.

Thankyou for the Link. I read it over several times and went into my programs and found the "authoring" and selected that as opposed to the Launcher which for some reason I have as the Short Cut and would much prefer the Authoring as that was what i used with the former MF 3 that came with my unit.

I think I may have several issues going on here at the same time and will have to resolve them one by one.
I noted that I used my Hauppauge very successfully with all my numerous videos back in September of 2005 when I purchased it. And I always had the video files on my HD as you described as being the option you use.
However when I looked at the Authoring window that opens, I always selected the second Icon to add files and not the first one which is the camera for new project.

First, when I clicked on the Movie Factory it came up with DVDMF "key error" and i clicked on OK and the usual blue horizontal blocks crossed the screen. And Movie Factory opened up with the selections that you described.
Then I clicked on your suggested new projects and got the message:
"Failed to connect to driver Hauppauge Win TV PVR USB2 and it showed the screen as channel 32 while I capture my video in my Hauppauge in channel 200 and always have. I just made that comment as I don't know what that is all about?

I should say that I have D/L the patches for MF 4 and am uptodate and have checked the Hauppauge site for D/L for drivers and there are some there for windows xp and the process to follow.

I was wondering if my unit needs these, and if i D/L them and it does not what harm could that do. I guess what I mean is I currently have a captured Video file in "My Videos" In "My Computer", however as described earlier I can play it back in Windows Media Player but can't open it when I go to my Movie Factory as "My Videos" in "My Documents" is blank and the message that MF gives me is that there is no video data, which puzzles me as it is there to play in my videos when i access it via my computer.
I don't understand what I am doing wrong here to be able to watch the video captured and yet MF does not see the files??? I am really confused!

Those are a couple of issues that I have noted.

The other question I had, is in your Link it showed that you could capture with Movie Factory 4, but I noted that in "Capture Properties", one had to select either cable or antenna and I will be capturing a Video that I am playing back; nothing from the TV channel itself.
So I assume that this method would not work for what I want to do and I would have to use Win TV am I correct? As I mentioned this is what I did successfully last year.
I will leave my comments there for now as those are some of the issues that obviously I have to resolve to start to get the programs operational. I hope that I have provided sufficient information.

BTW i just wanted to add for the previous member's information who suggested that an option to do my video to dvd quickly would be to purchase a Panasonic DMR-E20 dvd recorder, there is no model here in Canada, the only one is DMRES 155 and it is pricey at $249 and I really do want to get my Hauppauge up and opeational as it was with Movie Factory last fall. I believe it to be sufficient for my requirements, as all I am doing is wanting to straight copy my video to a dvd and I have a BenQ burner that I burn in Dvd ROM and all of my dvd's play on the entire family's dvd players which makes everyone happy.

BTW, is there a way to get rid of the Launcher that is there and simply have a Short Cut for authoring or do i always have to go into the Programs and select Authoring? I tried a right click and could not come up with the short cut option. I guess I could drag it onto the Desktop.
I would really appreciate all experienced comments on what appears to be a number of problems. I think if I start fixing some of these I may be on the road to successful capturing with probably a few more questions.

I have gone into Device Manager and under Sound Video and game Controllers found "Hauppauge Win TV PVR USB2 Encoder". Does it not have to also a "Decoder" as well???
And again being a Noob, is this the Driver for the Hauppauge, if it is not where do I look in Device Manager for the Driver to insure that it is installed. I would assume that something must be there if my video that I captured into My Videos is playable, but with the other error noted about my drivers in Movie Factory perhaps there is an issue there.

I should say that M$ Service Pack 2 was added after I did all of my successful capturing of Videos with my unit and MF 3 and my Movie Factory 4 was bought and installed before the SP2 install as well and I never tried it out at anytime until now. Could the SP2 installation have affected the programs and my drivers? The Office Techie did the install and that was last fall but I have not attempted to do any of this capturing until now.
Thankyou for taking the time and I hope that there maybe suggestions re: the above noted issues.
Best Regards.

Today is FRIDAY.
Will you be enjoying your grandchildren and searching for easter eggs on Sunday or sitting behind a dumb windows machine/computer.

MovieFactory 3/4/5 was written by Ulead to Import recorded videos from the new dvd recorders. After you import the videos you can edit them or do whatever you want to them. That is one of the nice features of MF.

The reason I mentioned a dvd recorder is to get immediate results and the time you need the videos done by.

Hope you get things working.

The store is the Future Shop here in Canada and they are the ones I paid $200 for the Hauppauge unit for and they indicated that to purchase a Panasonic Dvd Recorder for $249 is overkill for 1 video that I want to capture and that I had success with in using the former version of Movie Factory 3 that came with the unit. Now that program does not work b/c of this new "threat" error for "launcher exe." and so the Icon will not work as it did last september.
I will continue to persist in resolving the issues as buying a recorder for the purpose that i have a Hauppauge and a burner that is the best as far as i am concerned for quality and performance on any player is redundant and i have been able through forums albeit maybe not this one to resolve problems with software via dialogue before. At this particular point through another forum I have fixed one issue and the member was extremely well apprised with video capture.
I appreciate what you are saying it is Friday and there is Saturday and then there is Sunday at 6 PM when we get together and I have no other obligations until then.
Thus I will be working on this and have as I mentioned had a suggestion from another forum that has already fixed one issue and the member was very knowledgeable in a layperson's way and did not press that I am under such a major time constraint and perhaps so inept that I won't be able to resolve the matter with the help of knowledgeable Hauppauge and Movie Factory 4 users.
BTW, I find the video forums excellent with the diverse knowledge of participating members and software experience. Purchasing another unit to do what I successfully did before with my present equipment is simply not the way I resolve problems.
Regards, and BTW Happy Easter Egg Hunting!!!

Please try the following.
View the 5th post down at http://phpbb.ulead.com.tw/EN/viewtopic.php?t=11923
Then uninstall both versions of Movie Factory. Sorry but at the moment I haven't got the finicky details for version 3 (but if someone would kindly supply the 'folder' details I can update the list)

If you have the Full version of MF4 then simply install MF4 and don't install MF3. If its an upgrade try installing MF4 first, it may ask you to put your MF3 disc into the disc drive just to confirm you have one.

After installing MF4 go to the following link
http://www.ulead.com/tech/dmf/dmf_ftp.htm
and download both of the following
1. DVD MovieFactory 4.0 Update Pack Build 4.04
2. DVD MovieFactory 4 Hauppauge devices support pack ( 6 in 1)

Now try following the steps in my tutorial - As you already have a captured video scroll down the page until you get to this picture
Image
and continue from that point.

Thankyou for the reply. I spent the day uninstalling and reinstalling the Hauppauge insuring that I used the Hcwclear utility and went to the Support site and downloaded the latest usb driver, application etc.

Then I uninstalled the Movie Factory 4 and reinstalled and put the patches that the Link provided. And read over the the information on straight to disc, however could not find the tutorial referenced in the post.

I am going to try to do reading on what is available on Movie Factory 4 and search for the Tutorial keeping in mind the "authoring" instead of the Launcher.

I still have a problem right now with locating the video that I thought i captured to "My Videos", as I mentioned earlier I can find it when I click on My Computer and then My Videos but it is definitely not in My Videos in My Documents, that file is empty????
So I am not sure what I did wrong there.
I would appreciate any comments as to how the video files show up in the "My Computer".... My Videos and not the one in My Documents as that is the file that I need to open to Create a DVD, is that not correct?

I need to do the reading on straight to dvd and read what I printed out today on the settings for my Hauppauge unit as now I am somewhat confused about being able to use Movie Factory straight to dvd as I did not use that method when I was using the old Movie Factory 3 which I did not bother installing selecting to use the MF 4.
Again comments would be appreciated as I really would like to create a dvd from these video files or maybe they are just lost??and I have to try again?
Thankyou.

There is more than one "My videos" folder.
Locate your video and right click and select properties. You will now see the full path to the file.

Thankyou again, I checked by click on My Computers and properties and it shows My Videos: Loc C drive size 1.18gb (my video files that I captured) File Created Aug 30/05 and atributes: Read Only.

My Videos under my Documents is blank.

I am still searching for your Tutorial, I checked "Please Read before post as i always do before posting in a new forum and so I went back and saw Product Tutorials and movie factory 4 and straight to dvd and no tutorial that resembled what was in the post.
Also, checked General Web Info.

Where is there a good description of the settings for Hauppauge? i checked out their site and got some general ideas, however for example I am trying to find out as an example where the setting is for "vcr" as source. In this setup I did not scan Channels in as I don't plan on watching TV on the computer via the Hauppauge, simply playing back vhs tapes to create a DVD, so I am wondering if I can use the straight to DVD on Movie Factory for future vhs tapes, however for the one video file 1.18 GB that exists how can I get it to where Movie Factory will recognize it and will I have to choose New Project, that is why I want to locate the Tutorial that was referenced and can't find it.
BTW since i did not scan my channels on the Hauppauge unit it is set at channel 1, will that prevent my capturing a Video?

i did not find a lot on the Hauppauge set for setting information, although there is some. I was simply trying to navigate around to try to better understand the process and printed out pages for reading.

My neighbour uses Pinnacle 500 and said that he finds it more user friendly than what I seem to be going through. He did not realize there would be patches and so he is now going to check on his unit.
Since a person does not use the Unit on a regular basis as I do in the cae of my External Burner I will obviously need to take down detailed process notes and read before i tackle a capture and then also keep checking for patches.
Again I would appreciate comments so that i can get on with conversion of my video files if I can get at them and creat a DVD. (BTW is Pinnacle 500 more user friendly than Hauppauge with less patches etc. and also more appropriate for a user like me that does not use the unit on a regular basis.) I bought Hauppauge as the salesman said it was the most reliable.
Best Regards

Firstly you need to complete your system specifications on your profile page though I suspect you have windows XP.
Each users has a My videos folder, there is also an All users My videos folder

Example on one of my Hard Drive Setups
C:\Documents and Settings\Stephen\My Documents\My Videos
C:\Documents and Settings\VideoEditor\My Documents\My Videos
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Documents\My Videos
C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\My Documents\My Videos

The link to my tutorial was in my original post.
Here it is again

Yes I will complete my profile. I have a Toshiba, Satellite 2410 notebook, 1.9 ghz, intel pent 4, mobile processor, 512 RAM and use this strictly for my personal hobby use. Burning backup DVDs.

I again went >My Computer>C Drive>Properties and all it shows is:
C:\ (with nothing written after that) and then my video files are shown there as 1.18 GB.

Unlike when I again went >My Documents>folders>My Videos and NO files are shown > Properties and it shows C:\Documents and Settings\Egan\My Documents.

And I don't know what to do here.

That is why I am wondering if this program and Movie Factory 4 if not used regularly are not as user friendly as say Pinnacle when all I want to do is copy a VHS tape to DVD.
I will never use this Hauppauge unit to watch TV on.
I am simply wondering out loud here.

What I really need to try to do is get those video files out so that I can copy them to my DVD but when I go into Movie Factory it indicates that there is no video data I assume because there is Nothing in MY Documents.(My Videos)

I would appreciate comments on how to get to the bottom of this and I am going to the tutorial now.
It seems that this Hauppauge that i was sold does far more than what I need and likely will require me to be adding patches which I will have to keep on top of and as well Movie Factory 4, the latter i was never able to register the CD BTW as i could not find the serial number. I could not find anything from Elements 5, a digital river company invoice either.
I submitted the number off the Disk but it was rejected.
Thankyou very much again and I hope the above video files are accessible and that the details that i have provided will assist.
Best Regards
