Why the crazy (funny) names?

I´ve always wondered.... Why forum users create such extravagant names ? Would it not be easier to use your OWN name? Or maybe we like the weird feeling of "hacking" some how...

Often the names we want to use have already been taken by someone else and so we have to improvise

I think it has a little to do with protecting ones Identity. Some people are real concerned about having their identity stolen. Another reason is that on some forums people feel they can lash out if they hide behind a false name....

Well, at least my forum user name is very similar to my real name.
