Scratchy Sound

Post by Rex McCarty »

My Copy of DVD Movie factory came with E-Press's ONE but supposedly the programs were supposed to be full product. I tried it out on an AVI I made by screen capture from a Powerpoint Presentation my Sister sent me a few days ago and allthough the GUI didn't seem so easy it burned it to DVD fine except that when Played back the sound was really bad. Scratchy. Also I dont even know which codec it used and only two are listed Dolby and MPEG-2 both of which you have to buy soon or I suppose it wont work at all. Apparently it's not a full working product if there is something else to buy. If I did buy this codec is the sound going to work right ? I haven't had any problems before with getting good sound on DVD's I make with either Free or very cheap Software and have never had to buy Codec. Also easier and more complete Options with easier to use GUI. Rex.

You need to tell us what settings you employed.
Such as those listed in the 7th post down here:

I dont really know about the settings as I had to sort of feel my way through an unclear options setup. However it may be the DVD Player for TV as the sound is OK on my computer's surround system. It seems to have recorded in Dolby 1 Channel. Not sure why not stereo.I'm going to give up on this until I try and explore how all setup possibilities work.

Movie Factory can make a quite-good soundtrack. You didn't say what audio format your original AVI file had.... I assume it's an unusual format.* If it was DVD compatible LPCM, then Movie Factory could use it as-is. If it's being converted from one lossy format to another lossy format, there will be some quality loss.

If Movie Factory version allows you to choose Dolby (AKA AC3), then you have the full version, and you don't need to buy anything else.

I have noticed some distortion when I feed Movie Factory a file with MPEG-2 audio and convert it to AC3. I can fix it by reducing the audio level to 75%. The audio adjustment is under the audio tab on the enhance video screen. (Look in your user-manual if you can't find it.)

Your NTSC (USA) stand-alone DVD player is required to play both Dolby AC3 and LPCM. It might be able to Play MPEG-2 audio or MP3, but that's optional. PAL players are also required to play MPEG-2.

* An AVI file can contain audio & video with almost any format/compression. Most problems are from "strange" formats. There are just too freeekin' many formats and variations of formats! (DivX seems to cause the most trouble.)

The AVI showed to be PCM but I did a little reasearch on Codecs and formats and it's nowhere as simple as one might expect. Thanks for the support, I closing the subject. Rex.
