DVD movie factory 5 trial version, inporting AVI files.

Post by BJR74 »

Hi all, have been trailing DVD Moviemaker 5 and I really like the program and what it has to offer.

However I seem to be having an issue. I am looking to import video files from my computer into a new project to burn to DVD.

The files I am looking to import are avi files, that play fine on my computer but when importing them into a new movie maker project give me this message:

I am making an assumption it may have to do with the codec's, but as it plays fine on the computer in Windows Media, why might this error be showing?

Has anyone else experienced this? This is the only thing holding me back form purchasing the program....help :(

An AVI file can contain video in any format. AVI/DV files from a digital video camera are usually no trouble. However, AVI/MPEG-4 or AVI/Divx files seem to cause lots of trouble!

I have no idea why the Ulead programs can't use the codecs that Windows Media Player uses... :?

If you have a problem file-format, you might try looking for a 3rd-party program to convert it to AVI/DV or MPEG-2. (Don't convert it to MPEG-2 if you plan on editing it before you make a DVD.... MPEG-2 files can be trouble too!)

I was using it for something else, but I've had some luck with a universal conversion program called SUPER (FREE !!!).

I also have this EXACT problem. Here's the twist however. I have a copy of MF5 on my laptop (which produces the error) However I have a copy on my Desktop as well, which is a bit older, and it does not produce the error. I know the obvious question is why don't I just use my desktop, well the answer is that my only burner is on the laptop. I put the program on my Desktop because I thought I can create my project there then just send it to my laptop to burn, but it didn't work. Anyhow, why do you think I can get it to work on my Desktop and not my lappy??

Thanks

That has been answered before, your desk top has the relevant codec while your lappy doesn't

I figuired that much, so the real question is how do I know what codec I need and where do I get it?? I'm sorta new to this stuff, usually I just download codecs when a program prompts me too

How could we hazard a guess? We still don't know what the file properties of your avi's are? What program did you use to capture the file with? Is that program installed on your laptop?

OH Sorry, I didn't capture them at all. And as I said I'm sorta new at this kinda thing although I am computer savy. If I knew I was going to get flamed I would have just tried to figuire it out on my own.

I downloaded the files through a torrent. They are all .avi and I believe they are encoded with DivX

avi to dvd

Post by salvatore1327 »

I got a similar trouble. got 30 files (divx AVI) each abt 300-600 MB. each is about 1 hour video - it is a rip of an old tv show. what I was looking to do is to put it on a DVD in a format that any desktop DVD can play. when I make a new project (with a motion thumbnails menu and all) the program reports the total file is about 40 GiB (where the original files used for it are perhaps 3,5 GiB). any solution?

what I was told is: try to finish the process, make your menu, save it to HDD and than convert it via DVD Shrink or something. I don't like it 'cause I donť trust that the outcome quality is gonna be any good - that is if it works at all...
