"converting title" taking FOREVER

Post by cdkindle »

I'm having trouble and after reading the other posts, I'm really frustrated knowing people can burn in close to actual time while I'm lucky if it gets done overnight.

I converted the file to MPEG, but when I tried to burn it never got past the "converting title" - 52% at 2 hours! (cancelled) I had gone through and ended everything (some would just come back) except the 11 programs on the list in the thread about speeding up your computer, but it didn't seem to help.

I had just defraged...

There's so much out there as far as the best way that I don't know where to start.

I can give you info on the AVI and MPEG file, but since it never gets that far (unless I leave it overnight)...

I have the menus as simple as possible - no title menu and no motion menu - just a simple 2MB menu.

I was plodding along burning overnight, but now that I read how fast others can do it, I'm not as content.

I am afraid we are going to need rather more information -- though thank you for already having filled in your system specs. (Indeed, IMHO with your system, there is no reason why your rendering time should not be in the order of twice -- or at most, three times -- real time.)

We will in fact need the file properties you are using for your captured files and then for the mpeg file you are converting those too. You also haven't told us exactly how long your project is.

More to the point, however, we need to know exactly what steps you have taken, right from the beginning when you captured your DV/AVI files. I know you have tried to explain what you have done, but it is not really clear to me. You say you converted your files to mpeg. Can we assume that you did all necessary editing before that, while the files were still in AVI format? Also, can you confirm that you went to Share > Create Video File and then chose 'DVD' rather than mpeg-2? Once you had that mpeg file, however, did you then close your project, start a new one, and go to Share > Create Disc, and again choose DVD (ensuring that the burn properties were the same as the ones in the mpeg file you created)? If those properties were not the same, or you did some editing to the mpeg file once it was created, then Video Studio will re-render it in the burning process, and it shouldn't be doing this.

It is also not clear to me that when you got to 52% of the converting process, it was you who cancelled the process, frustrated over the time it was taking, or whether the program did this itself... (I cannot understand what you meant when you said "I had gone through and ended everything (some would just come back)". Anyway, while the converting (multiplexing) of titles will take some time, it seems to me that even with a long project, it should not be taking this long (2 hours for 52%) if indeed it is just multiplexing, as opposed to re-rendering, which, as I say, it should not be doing at the burning stage.

I am starting over - burned the last project overnight last night.

I am following the AVOID PROBLEMS... thread meticulously, but some things are not too clear - Step 4 of the Edit Phase - you have to change the Edit File Format to MPEG - (is that right) - to be able to select the Media type (took me a while to find that - I captured my video in the AVI format because I had the problem where it was clearing some kind of buffer and would keep ending when I tried to capture to MPEG)

Here's my project properties
NTSC drop frame (29.97 fps)
MPEG files
24 Bits, 720 x 480, 29.97 fps
Lower Field First
(DVD-NTSC), 4:3
Video data rate: Variable (Max. 6000 kbps)
LPCM Audio, 48000 Hz, Stereo

Answer to some of the other things I didn't make clear:
I ended the converting process, not wanting to wait another 2 hours. I ended as many tasks in my task manager as I could.

The length of the captured video I'm working with now is 42 mins.

Here's the properties of the AVI file I captured and the MPEG after I created it:

It took about 1 hour to render it from AVI to Mpeg

I did a very simple menu - classic style, no motion, only 3 chapter breaks. 1MB

Starting burn... and it goes SO much faster. I must have missed a setting last night - and also, the file was twice as big. So I'll go ahead and send this since I collected all this info...

Thanks for your help and patience. Kudos to those who figured this all out.

Is there hope for being able to capture straight to mpeg? I never did get any dropped frames, just that buffer clearing message.
