Restarts in Video Studio 9

Post by daveyp »

I've been suffering random restarts when using video studio 9.

Basically at random intervals it will just make my pc conk out and restart, without warning, and it is very regular.

I thought maybe its over heating or something, but i've checked my temperatures in the bios when it restarts and its not even close to over heating. So i don't think it's that.

I can't really see it being an issue of specs because my pc is pretty decent:

AMD Athlon XP 3200+
XP Home service pack 2
1024 gb ram (PC2700 :() Two sticks of 512 in dual channel though.
160gb hard drive, 50 gb of which is free, i think it's only ide not s-ata though.
On board graphics :p Which i guess could be it, although the onbaord graphics seem alright, they seem to handle games better than the 6600gt in my other pc :|

I've also lowered the undo history to see if that would help.

Another thing i thought it could be was that i dont have a purchased version of the package, but it is a legit trial version, so i can't see that being a problem either.

I can't even find a pattern either it's not like it only restarts when i do certain things, it does it during anything from when zooming in on the timeline to adding a rain effect and customizing it.

Anyone able to help ?

Finally. sorry about the really long post, i'm in a really talkative mood for some reason and i also assumed that giving as much information as i could would be mor helpful ;)

And sorry again if there are any typos/ if this topic has been covered before, i did have a quick look around to check but i may have missed something.

hahha ok well i've had a look around and there are several topics already on this.

but if anyone has any useful ideas to add it would be greatly appreciated.

one idea i've read is trying to stop all anti-virus programs. i'll give that a go.

Hi DavyP, welcome to the forums,

This could be caused by several things. It could be applications/utilities conflicting with each other, or hardware issues such as bad RAM, or a hard drive going bad.

1. When you are editing video, disable any applications or utlities that run in the background, such as anti-virus, internet connections, spyware and adware, or automatic updates.

2. Check the Event Viewer, it will generally point to the culprit that may be causing your system to crash. Right-click on My Computer then choose Manage, navigate to the Event Viewer and look for any red circles with crosses.

Even though you are running the trial version this should not cause your system to crash. You system seems to be up to the task.

Hey :)

Thanks for the help.

I tried ending non-critical procceses, such as firewall and anti spyware and firewall, which i think did actually help a little but it sitll crashed just as i'd customised the rain to just how i wanted it :(

I'll try your other suggestion now.

It's really irritating though as i am trying to edit and put together a stop motion animated lego film i'm making and its impossible if it crahes every 5 minutes.

Wow, i've never seen this event viewer program, it looks very useful.

Well i've found this has come up in a few of the red cross locations, and the time given is the same time as when i think the pc crashed:

d:\qxp_slp\com\com1x\src\events\tier1\eventsystemobj.cpp

any ideas ?

The d drive is a protected partition my pc came with, used for system recovery.

All of my crashes have been due to corrupted video files (MPEGs, in my case).

What format are your video files? Where did they come from? (AVI/DV files direct from a video camera seem to cause the least trouble... Highly compressed files, such as MPEG-4 or DivX downloaded from the Internet seem to cause the most trouble.)

Ermm basically it's jpgs, put in to jasc animation shop then made in to an avi, with divx chosen as the codec when i save it through animation shop.

So are you saying i should go for uncompressed avi's ? :p

because the uncompresed one came to 200mb for 10 seconds of film at 640x480, 60fps.

I'm afraid that, with the trial version of VS9, you will indeed need to choose the uncompressed AVI format (if your animation does not indeed allow you to save to the DV version of AVI). You are in fact choosing an mpeg-4 version of AVI (divX) and as DVDDoug has just said, that format can be problematic. Quite apart from anything else, VS9 can only handle mpeg-4 if it has a special plug-in. But that plug-in is only available for the full version of VS9, and will not work on the trial version...

oh right. Could the use of this codec cause it to restart the pc then ?

It doesnt restart straight away, thats what confused me, like i would be adding rain and i would be going through the key frames changing the length and it will be fine and then i'll go and click on one of the key frames and this time it resarts. There didnt seem be any link.

Your problem is almost certainly due to using a DivX codec. Try converting it to either DV type 1 or MPEG2. There is a free program available for this called Super. You can find a link to it in our free downloads section

Thanks for your replies, i've fixed the problem now.

It was because i was using the divx codec, i used video toolbox and made them in to mpeg 2's and now everything is perfect. The program is also very fast now as well, everything is instant unlike before.

I think i'll be buying the full version now 8)

That's what we like to hear -- a successful outcome. Good luck with the full version -- it's a great program, even if there are some problems with aspects of it.
