Post by julia058 »

I'm using a Sony digial recorder, trying to transfer home movies to DVD using MovieFactory 5.0. My Windows XP computer sees the Sony camera but MovieFactory keeps giving me the error message

Failed to connect to driver: Sony DV

You need to use an IEEE1394 firewire i-link connection.
The supplied USB2 cable is unsuitable for video transfer.

Firstly we need to establish of your computer can "see" your camcorder
Are you using windows XP? (Please complete your system details on your profile page)
If so does windows Movie maker (Which is a part of XP) allow you to capture from your camcorder?

If it does then check that you are using the correct capture plug in.
If not then you need to check the IEEE1394 cable.

Yes, the computer see my camcorder.

Are you using windows XP?
Yes, XP sp2

If so does windows Movie maker (Which is a part of XP) allow you to capture from your camcorder?
Yes, it's working with premier too

If it does then check that you are using the correct capture plug in.
Which ??

If not then you need to check the IEEE1394 cable.
The cable is fine.

You still haven't completed your system details on your profile page.
I also have a Sony Camcorder and I have WindowsXP SP2 with an IEEE1394 connection between camcorder and computer.

Here's how I do it.
1. Start MovieFactory5 with the camcorder turned OFF.
2. Start new DVD project.
3. Next
4. Turn ON the camcorder in PLAYBACK mode.
5. Cancel the Message that pops up from windows informing you that a new device has been detected.
6. Click the top left icon depicting a camcorder. A dialogh box appears. Wait for about 30 seconds until it becomes populated. It now reads
Source - DV
I change the Duration to Full DV Tape
Format - From the drop down list I select AVI
Capture folder - Select sopmewhere appropriate, preferably I different PHYSICAL hard drive to the one containinng the Operating system
Advanced settings.
Capture Options.
You can either choose split video which then gives two further options
a. by scene detection (every time the camcorder was turned on/off)
b. By date change.
I prefer to capture mine without split video byut that is choice.
Select Device control
This should be reading MS 1394 Device Control.
Click "Start Capture" and capturing should now Start.
clcik "Stop Capture" when completed.
Click OK to return to the add media screen.
