Darker images when i download

When i download my video from my Mini DV camera to Video Studio,using firewire. which on the camera videoscreen looks good. the image on Video is dark. is this a common issue?

Yes, for a number of reasons.

One, the gamma adjustments between a TV and PC monitor will not be the same unless they are carefully calibrated.

Second, analog TVs are interlaced devices that display two alternating half-frames. Therefore, only half the screen is being illuminated at any given time by the electron beam, making the TV picture darker. Analog PC monitors don't have this issue because they aren't interlaced, and every line of the display gets painted for every frame displayed.

PS: You may want to get a video calibration DVD and use that on both your TV and your PC -- I'm not sure where you are located, but in the US, places like Best Buy and Circuit City have them, and sometimes give them away for free.

The other simple explanation, with which everyone on this Board would agree, I think, is that the preview screen in Video Studio is not of particularly high quality. Capture video usually looks darker (and often grainier) than it does in the camera. The good news is that if you follow the recommended procedure correctly, your burned DVD will not be dark or grainy...
