Problem when capturing from DVD when using VS 8.0
I have both VS 8.0 and VS 9.0 and I have given up trying to capture direct from a DVD with VS 9.0. But I can capture direct from a DVD using VS 8.0 and then edit it (with sound) in VS 9.0 so that is what I'm doing.
My problem is that VS 8.0 breaks a 2 hour DVD copied from TV into 24 or 25 separate video clips of 4 to 5 minutes each which are not necessarily at the program breaks in the TV program. For example, I copied the recent figure skating onto DVD-RWs and when I take them into VS 8.0 the clips are broken in the middle of a skaters program.
When I then edited the video in VS 9.0, I was able to cut out what I didn't want, but with the clips that were supposed to be continuous I had both audio and video pops and hesitation. I didn't use any transitions or audio fade in/out between these clips because, as stated, the action and sound is continuous.
My question: Is there any way to avoid this problem, either by taking the whole 2 hours in as one clip, or setting the clip breaks manually prior to importing the video?
Thanks for your help.

The DVD Import function in VS9 will import as one long Title. The older Import function separated each chapter mark by making them their own video files. You probably had auto-chapters every "x" minutes turned on during the DVD recording
So, the problem is trying to figure out why VS9's Import function is not working for you. What error are you getting? Are you putting a checkmark in the little square boxes when the DVD "tree" structure appears (while Importing from DVD using VS9)? You have to put the checkmark at the Title level, or if you want you can put a check in a specific chapter mark to only import that chapter.

George

Thanks for your quick response.
The reason I'm using VS 8.0 for DVD import rather than VS 9.0 is because it is much faster. To import in VS 9.0 takes so long that I quit rather than wait for it. Also, VS 9.0 also had the video broken down into chapters of 4 or 5 minutes and I tried to just import the chapters I wanted, but the program breaks were still there. Given the length of time it was taking, I didn't try to import by checking the Title level. VS 8.0 imports (albeit broken down into separate clips) very quickly.
Is there something I can check to import the whole video as one clip in VS 8.0?
Again, thanks for your help.

Unfortunately, I don't think so -- IIRC, the Title option was introduced with VS9 (and MF4). Although there might be certain OEM versions that might have the Title import option before VS9/MF4.Elcamp wrote:Is there something I can check to import the whole video as one clip in VS 8.0?
I wonder why VS9 is taking so much more time for you? Have you tried to just copy the DVD contents to a folder on your hard drive, then do the Import from your Hard drive instead of directly from disc?
Do you have any "packet writing" software installed? If so, I would uninstall that to see if you get any better performance.
Also, try updating VS9 with the current patches.

I forgot to mention in my last reply, that VS 9.0 won't recognize some of my DVD-RWs, i.e. TDK. It did recognize my Verbatim DVD-Rws though, so I assumed it was the DVDs rather than Ulead.
Yes, I have tried to copy to my hard drive and I couldn't import them, so I had to change the extension on the files from .VOB to .MPG and when I did that, the video was completely unuseable.
What do you mean by 'packet writing' software? I did have Nero installed, but I removed it.
I will try the current patches.
Thanks

I think the -RW's need to be Finalized before you can use them (the +RW's do not, but that doesn't help if your recorder cannot use +RW's).
After you copy the DVD Contents to a folder on your hard drive, you still need to IMPORT from DVD -- just browse to the folder to do the Import. btw, are your dvd's dvd-video or -VR formatted
what are the file names on your dvd discs?
Renaming *.vob to *.mpg works sometimes, but not always (as in your case), and there's an issue when your video is larger than the 1gb *.vob limit on a properly formatted dvd -- it will go to a new *.vob -- so you could get glitches between the *.mpg renames.
"Packet writing" software that lets you copy/paste files to a dvd disc (as if it were a hard drive). Software like InCD (look if you have that installed).

The -RW DVDs were finalized and as I said VS 9.0 did recognize the video and I was able to import from the Verbatim DVD. My recorder can use either - or +, but - works in most DVD players, so I use it.
When I copied the DVD to my hard drive, I did browse to the folder, but I got a message saying 'file mismatch', so that's when I changed the extension. My DVD's are dvd-video formatted and the files are in a folder called 'Video_TS'. The file names are VTS_01_0, VTS_01_1, etc.
Given the problems I've been having, I have been importing from the DVD's to my hard drive via my ATI 'S-Video' connection. That allows me to only import what I want, but it does take it from digital to analog, back to digital and I think some of the quality is lost doing it this way.

Just to be clear, after copying to your hard drive (copy the entire VIDEO_TS folder to your hard drive), did you go to the CAPTURE step, then hit the IMPORT FROM DVD/DVD-VR option, then browse to the folderElcamp wrote:When I copied the DVD to my hard drive, I did browse to the folder, but I got a message saying 'file mismatch', so that's when I changed the extension. The error message you indicated (file mismatch) would suggest that you tried to add a video by browsing to the folder and trying to click on a *.vob file (this is not what you want to do).

No, I didn't do it the way you indicated. I did try to import the VOB files separately. So I'll give it a try that way.
BTW, I downloaded 2 patches, Pro8 Flash Update and UVS 9 Full_Patch1 and installed them. I tried VS 9.0 again and it now recognizes my TDK DVD video and brings up the import function. However, when I try to check 'Title' it freezes and I have to Ctrl/Alt/Delete to get out of it and then restart my computer to open my DVD drive.
Thanks for all your help. I'll try to copy to my hard drive and see if I can import it as you suggest.
