Post by cgflembo »

I dont know if this is a silly question but is there a way to stop the juddering like strobe effect when viewing the screen on the pc while capturing the video from my camcorder. I am using VideoStudio 9.

How are you connecting the camcorder to the PC?
USB is not the best of methods, you need an IEEE1394 firewire/i-link cable

Also, the capture takes priority over the preview -- if you have a slow CPU, little memory, or a slow hard drive, the capture may not preview smoothly. The preview essentially only updates when UVS has time to spare while capturing.

Depending on exactly what form the distortion takes, it could also be indicative of other problems. If you are capturing DV and don't have a relatively powerful computer, then you may be capturing using DV Type 2 encoder and your computer cannot handle the output. The capture may show juddering video and corrupted audio. In that case, change to Type 1 in the Options cogwheel icon on the capture screen.

If you are capturing direct to mpeg-2 format, then you may be capturing using the wrong Field Order. If capturing from most digital sources, you should normally be using Lower Field First (Field Order A); while most analogue devices, including most capture cards, use Upper Field First (Field Order B).

We normally recommend against capturing direct to mpeg-2 unless you have no alternative (e.g. from a capture card which does not allow capture to DV/AVI format), and particularly if your computer is not a powerful one.
