audio out of sync (not dropped frames)

Post by roandsteve »

I captured a 90 minute VHS. The AVI file is 19 gig. When I play the AVI the audio is in sync the whole 90 minutes. I bring it into Videostudio 8 or 9. Playing as project the audio is in sync. I create MPG file and play that MPG the audio is still in sync.
I burn to disc. Play the disc and the audio plays out of sync. By the 80 minute mark it's off by 4 seconds. Any ideas?
Thanks

How do you capture the VHS -- via some sort of analog-to-dv converter?

Are your captures dv .avi? if so, are they Type-1 or Type-2?

Here's a trick, on the VS9 Timeline, cut the video every 15-20
minutes. Then render out your mpeg.

Make sure you don't re-encode during the authoring stage (using
the "Do not convert compliant mpeg files" option).

George

In the list of most frequently asked questions this ranks as number one.
It has already had a good airing.

That's a little weird...

Well.... its not THAT unusual to have a corrupted MPEG that plays back OK, but makes out of sync DVDs. But, it doesn't sound like you did anything to corrupt it...

You didn't edit it after you converted it to MPG did you? I mean, you burned the whole thing to the DVD as one program... no trimming or anything?

What's the difference in the MPG file and the DVD format? Different audio format? Different bitrate? Anything that would cause it to be re-coded or re-multiplexed?

Wow thanks everybody for the fast response.

Steve - I understand what all the links you gave are saying(I will try them when I get home) but in general if I have a good MPG file and I author to a DVD isn't that the same as copying a file and adding some menus?
What is altering the audio file?

The authoring program I'm using is Videostudio and I tell it to leave MPG files alone, which it does because the authoring only takes 10 minutes.

I capture VHS through a Sony miniDV cam into PC by firewire.
The DV type is whatever the default is (the type that keeps audio and video together).

When you say cut the video, do you mean split it on timeline but render them all together to one MPG file or render each 15 minutes to an MPG and then put all the MPG's together on the disc authoring list?

Should changing the audio from LPCM to MPG audio make a difference?

Should I be doing my trial and error in Videostudio 8 or 9?

Thanks
Steve

That might be a clue... It can, if you have a corrupt MPEG.... I just don't know how your MPEGs are getting corrupted. :?

The audio and video are multiplexed together (interwoven) in one file... A little video, then a little audio, then a little video... So, as long as the file stays intact, the audio and video cannot get out of sync.

When you go from LPCM to MPEG audio, the audio get's de-multiplexed, converted, and re-multiplexed... now it might be out of sync! :(

BTW- The "sneaky" corruption is probably being fixed (i.e. bad frames being thrown-out, etc.). I assume the DVD isn't corrupted, just out of sync. :(

You haven't told us where you are in the world (though I am assuming it is in an NTSC country since the OOS problems seem most common with NTSC users...) Nor have you told us anything about your computer system. However, as you will see amongst the mass of information Steve has drawn your attention to on OOS problems, you need to be aware that mpeg layer 2 audio is not part of the NTSC DVD standard, even though most modern NTSC DVD players will apparently play it. Have you tried using AC-3/Dolby audio instead? This will produce an audio file of about the same size as the mpeg audio one if you don't have the room to leave the original LPCM format on the final DVD. And of course, VS9 has a native capacity to capture, edit and produce videos using AC-3 audio.

Ken
I'm in the US Long Island New York. My PC is loaded up and can handle anything. I did try different audio and video settings.

Thanks to everyone. I tried all sugestions and one worked.
I cut the 90 minute clip into 4 parts and the audio is in perfect sync on the created mpg file and the final authored DVD.
Cut into 2 or 3 parts did not work.
Don't know why this worked. Looking back I don't think I ever had a clip this long that didn't have edits. This was just a straight wedding VHS to DVD transfer.
Thanks again
