MSP 6.5 and Win XP SP2 issue - Odd Error Message - Upgrade?

Post by JimF in RI »

I'm new to this forum but have MSP 6.5 Video Editor experience. Can you suggest a solution to the following?

My objective:
Create short video clips MPEG 1 for PowerPoint presentations. I capture 720x480 DV AVI clips with Premiere Pro 1.5. I then import the edited AVI files into MSP Video Editor 6.5 to create the finished MPEG 1 file.

The probelm:
MSP 6.5 Video Editor (with original Win XP MSP Patch installed) created MPEG 1 (or MPEG2) clips perfectly with Win XP (early versions). However, my company required me to upgrade my Dell Dimension to Win XP SP2. Now, I get an error message whenever I try to create any file with MSP VE. The message is (Error number 16333:1:2 "The File May Be Write-Protected". That makes no sense. Nothing is write-protected.

Options: Is MSP 6.5 compatible with Win XP SP2? If not, what options do you suggest? What MSP version works with SP2 if that's the problem. Or, what software can I use to create MPEG1 files? Thanks in advance for your guidance. Jim F.

I have MSP 7.3. MSP 7 had issues with XP SP2 also initially. These were fixed when MSP 7 SP3 came out. MSP 8, AFAIK, does not have an issue with XP SP2 at all.

Are you telling me Premier Pro cannot create mpeg1 files?

MSP tries to create temporary files in "C:\MSP{x} Preview Files" where {x} is 6 or 7 (possibly 8 to - dunno). You can change this directory.

If you are not administrator of your XP installation, you may not have the rights to create or modify files in this directory.

I'm assuming you have the rights to create/modify files in the directory where you are trying to write the finished file, but this could also be the cause of your problem.

To check - put two folders on your desktop called "MSP temp" and "MSP final". In preferences, change the location of the temporary files to "C:\Documents and settings\{Yourlogin}\Desktop\MSP temp", then try to write the file to the "MSP final" directory.

Let us know how you get on.

Have you tried MPEG1 files in Powerpoint? I recall having some problems, and re-encoding all the videos into .AVI so they would work properly in Powerpoint. I think from memory I was using MPEG2.
