I'm very new at this, what do I need to do to upgrade from my current version of Photo impact? Can I just go right from version 5 to 11? Please help!~~Cindy

That is difficult to say, since you did not mention whether you installed PI5 in XP, or it was installed in an earlier OS and have made the ttransition to XP since and now want to upgrade. That scenerio could cause problems.

If you installed PI5 in XP originally, and you bought PI11 as an Upgrade it should overwrite PI5. That is if you installed the previous version and install the new version to the same default location.

Read everything carefully during installation. If you are concerned that you may lose any presets you previously created before install copy the Ulead folders to a backup folder.

upgrading to PI11

I had version PI5 in Windows ME, then upgraded to XP. Now I'm not able to download any images from my camera, so hoping that upgrading to version 11 might help.

Fisrstly version 5 does not qualify for an upgrade discount

Second. PhotoImpact 11 installs into its own folder and so you would have both versions which are able to run side by side on the same computer.

Upgrading from PI5 to PI11

Post by clatham13 »

I'm not worried about the cost of the upgrade "Fisrstly version 5 does not qualify for an upgrade discount". I just want to make sure that before I purchase the upgrade, it will indeed help my situation of not being able to upload my images from my digital camera. I've uninstalled & then reinstalled my software for the camera, and PI5 doesn't recognize the camera plugged into the USB cord.
Someone, please advise. Thank you!

Please complete you system details on your profile page.
I could then see which operating system you are using.

Windows XP will treat a digital camera connected to the computer by way of a USB connection as if it were a hard drive and assign it a drive letter.

"Windows XP will treat a digital camera connected to the computer by way of a USB connection as if it were a hard drive and assign it a drive letter." I just checked, and there isn't a drive letter assigned to the USB connection. What now? By the way, I really appreciate all help I've received so far!

Seems like Windows XP hasn't detected the camera.
With it connected via USB and turned ON goto the Windows XP Control Panel and select cameras and scanners.
If your device isn't listed use the "add an imaging device" wizard"

It will only do that if there is a device hooked up. If your camera is connected and it doesn't show, hmmm ...?

What camera is it, is the cable ok, how exactly do you connect it?

Heinz,

Versions 3 was the full, and versions 4 and 5 were upgrades. The versioin 6 I later got was a full and all of the versions that came after that are upgrades. Seems the issue is the length of the Serial Number between versions.

Since Ulead dosen't support 5 and below anymore, and all of my computers use XP, guess I no longer need 3, 4, or 5 anymore. Haven't used 5 in 3 or 4 years, I think.

Too bad I liked 3 the best. I only use PI11 on my main computer now.

It doesn't matter whether your qualifying product itself is an upgrade or the full version. Prior to PI 11 I upgraded to PI 10 from my already upgraded PI XL. That was an upgrade from PI 7 SE. Never needed any of the previous versions to qualify for an upgrade, only the preceeding one.

On the other hand, I know of people, that have every version of PI they ever owned still installed. The say that every version had its particular advantage over previous and subsequent versions. That never occured to me though. PI 7 SE was a bit rudimentary to me (didn't really know how to use it either) and I upgraded to PI XL pretty quickly. After that I upgraded to PI 10 when I rebuilt my computer. I couldn't find my installation CD for PI 7 and, hence, could not install PI XL :? PI 10 installed without a hitch when pointing the installer to the setup.exe of PI XL even though PI 7 was not installed then and never has been since. Later on I found the PI 7 CD and installed PI XL as well. There are a few things different in PI XL and for that reason I still have it installed.

When I went for PI 11 it ended up being a full version rather than an upgrade.
