How do I create new transitions?

Like most of us I've saved transitions that have been customised in the customs folder. But these have been based on existing transitions included in the software,

How do you create new ones from scratch? Do you need to be a programmer? which I'm not.

There's a tutorial on Ulead's Learning Center Website that shows how you can create masks to use as transitions.
