Menuebuttons as Hotspots on a Background Picture

I try to make a DVD Project with a background picture. On this picture I put some invisible buttons. (hotspots)

I would like that these invisible buttons have some influence on the background picture in order that I can visualize active and inactive status.

Is this possible or how can I achive my idea?

Haven't played with the invisible buttons, but I have change the opacity (or is it transparency) of the buttons. That will make the button invisible, but will show a colored 'shape' of the button when highlighted.
