Bottom distortions in signals captured from VHS
Hi,
I have captured some DV via a AD converter from my VCR.
The quality is ok, but there are some distortions on the bottom.
How can I get rid of those distortions in Videostudio 9.
Can I use some crop function or are there some tools to do this ?
Does somebody know the origin of those distortions in signals captured from a VCR ?
Thanks,
Marc

That is normal for analog captures, you are seeing the overscan area that is normally hidden by a mask on a TV.
Just drop the Cropping filter onto your video and customize it. Set it to a horizontal and vertical size of 96% or so, and leave the Resize checkbox unchecked -- otherwise Videostudio will spend alot of time filling in those 4% you won't be able to see on a TV anyway, and it will also slightly degrade the picture in the process.
Make sure you use the same settings for both keyframes of the filter, or the settings will progressively change from the first keyframe to the second.

There are various devices available.
The way I moved my old VHS tapes onto DVD was via a Hauppauge TV card.
Negative side: Only captures in MPEG format so you can have problems if you want to do editing, other than simply cutting out the start/end.
If you have recorded stuff of the TV and want to cut out the adverts you have to be wary of the audio/video synch issues.
Positive side: Having a TV card in your computer turns it into a television with teletext facilities so if your into recording your favourite TV show (bearing in mind copyright issues) you can now dump that old VHS recorder.

I know Alan, I read your other post after I posted my above response. The fact remains, for me at least, I had all sorts of issues with different capture cards. The only thing that worked is the pass through function of my camcorder.alanball wrote:Thanks for reply heinz-oz but this is an on going thing I am having problems with, refer post:

I personally feel that the issue is due to something in your source files, not in the way you capture. Just because you can't see it while the clip is still in its analog stage doesn't mean that the problem is not there to start with. Analog and digital are two completely different kettle of fish.
Sorry I can't be of more help but I think you should look more closely at the source material.
