Backing Up & Saving Video Studio Projects in VS8

Post by JamesMatt »

Greetings,

I had to delete some of my project files to make space for more projects in VS8. (But before deleting I called myself backing up the projects to an external drive.) What is the best way to save them to a DVD or external USB hard drive. I tried the save as feature, but when I tried to retrived a project that I had saved to the external drive to re-edit, the only thing came up was the titles & transitions, nothing else. What did I do wrong? What other software do I need to buy?
Note: When I do delete the projects, I also must delete the files in the convert folder to gain space. (As of now I have two 160GB internal hard drives & a 200GB external hard drive.) Thanks, James.

Oops. Bad news unfortunately.
When you save a project file you are only saving a set of instructions
such as where cuts have been made, transitions inserted, titles, sound effects etc.
The project does not include the actual video clips, sound files etc.

When you come to re-use the project file it will expect everything to be located in the same place as when the project file was created.

How you go about this will depend upon the sizes of the files involved
unlike "normal" computer work involving megabytes, Video work involves Gigabytes.

You may wish to consider utilities along the lines of Winzip or Microsoft backup

Ron are you able to disclose if VS10 will include a Smart Package along the lines of Media Studio 8?

Have a look at this topic on the 'DownUnder Perspective" site referenced from the top sticky post - it covers archival an mechanism for your project/video files:

If there is anything that is not obvious to you please let me know as sometimes when you write up a set of instructions for somebody you can assume a certain level of familairity or knowledge - and I might have targetted it at too high a level :-).
