Compression/DVD sizing question.

Post by Mister Mike »

I am currently using ULead 7 Se. I have made a couple of dvd successfully. But I am having a problem with compression and sizing when ever I try to put more than an hour or so on one dvd disk.
I am transfering 8mm and Hi8mm to my pc in DV format. I edit add titles etc and then burn. But if my footage is longer than say 70 -75 mins I can not fit it on the dvd. Example:
My latest tape was 1hr 42 mins. The program stated the footage was 5.7 GB. The video data rate was at 8000 kbps I changed it to 6000 kbps via "Change MPEG Settings" in the Project Settings window. It then stated the footage was 4.3 GB and 4.4 was available on the new dvd media. So I proceeded to render and burn. A few hours later I got an error message stating there was not enough disk space. (Hard Drive space was ok)

Did I compress the footage correctly? Why didn't I get a message that there was not enough disk space in the beginning? Do I now have to rerender and burn again? Thanks for any help.

I would think your problem Mike is that the figures you are seeing in the burn module have been rounded by the software and are much to close for comfort, for instance the true available space on a DVD is 4.37 Gb not 4.4 as quoted , and your video file quoted as 4.3 may well be 4.35 ish so that by the time the 'housekeeping' was done on the DVD it had run out of space. You didn't get the message to the end because the programme didn't know until then that it didn't have enough space.

I'm afraid you do need to render and burn again but this time try a lower Video Data (sometimes called bit) Rate - say 5500 so that there is more distinction between required and available disc space.

Ok Thanks. Just to be sure. I did do the compression correctly I just need to lower the rate to 5500 or so? Correct? I got confused with Video Data Rate and Video Bit Rate.

It sounds as though you did it correctly.

Brian Cee Thanks for your help. I dropped the VDR to 5000 and everything went well. I took a long time to render & burn so I only viewed the finished product quickly but it looked ok.
