I was rushing off to work this morning but I now have more time to supply some details.
I have used VS7 and VS8 successfully for over a year in editing MPEG2 files captured by my ADS Instant DVD 2.0 capture box (I had been using DMF 3.0 DC to add chapters and burn the MPG files to DVD).
About a month ago I got a Toshiba set-top DVD recorder and am trying to figure out the best way to edit the DVD-RW and DVD-R recordings I have been making. Toshiba records the audio as 2 channel Dolby Digital so my first attempt to edit a DVD-R recording with UVS8.0 was a silent failure... the video came out great but there was no audio.
I then tried to use DMF 3.0DC to edit the DVD-R since it supports AC3 but it just hung up.
My next step was to look on the internet for a program to convert MPG files with AC3 audio into MPG files with LPCM or MPEG audio. (I did find one program for $30 but it would take ~5 hours to convert a 2 hour MPG file.)
For the heck of it I decided to check to see if ULead was offering an AC3 pack for UVS8.0 and they were so I bought the electronic download version, only to have it crash UVS8.01 when I was saving the edited project as a MPG file with the same properties. Funny thing is that clip properties did not indicate the audio as AC3 so I created a custom entry matching the details of the original file. When I would try to save the file to MPG it would proceed normally (maybe 5x real time for a Smart Render) but when it got up to 20% (~778,000MB) UVS801 would crash with a dialog box offering to send a bug report to MS. I then trimmed down the project to a smaller size and tried to save it to MPG. This time it crashed UVS801 after 36% (~400,000MB).
While typing this up one possible explanation occurred to me: I had imported the clips (w/ AC3) from the DVD-R into UVS80 _BEFORE_ installing the AC3 pack so maybe there was a problem because of that. I will now try importing the DVD-R again to see if the problems continue.
Thanks!
