Please, someone help me. I hate this program

Post by who4ever »

Please, someone, tell me what to do. I have no sound in my VSP files. I have a 2 and a half hour Who concert that I downloaded from Pete Townshend's web site and want to burn it to DVD. My main problem (there are many for a newby such as me, but this is my main concern at the moment) is that when I play the project, there is no audio. I only hear the concert when I play the clip. When dealing with a concert, this is crucial. All video looks the same. The only way to distinguish what you are watching is by hearing the songs. This problem has culminated, now, in the Share section, trying to create the DVD. My concert is saved as a VSP file, because I had to cut out extra video at the beginning and the end. So, I went by the book and went to: Share-Create DIsc-Add VideoStudio Project-found my project, selected it and clicked on Open. I selected that sideo in the Media Clip List-Add/Edit Chapters-and then I was stuck. The manual says "Drag the Jog Slider to move to a scene to set it as a chapter then click Add." I want to create a chapter for every fourth song. But I can't tell what song it is because I can't hear them. I hate this program already. What do I have to do?

What version of VS are you using?

It seems like your video may have Dolby Digital. If you are using VS8, then you would have had to purchased the AC3 plug-in when it was available. VS9 does support AC3 (Dolby digital).

What are the video clip properties? Right click on a clip in the timeline and post them here. You may also want to post what your project properties are.

"I went by the book and went to: Share-Create DIsc-Add VideoStudio Project"

Where did you find this "book"?

The sticky post at the top of this forum says:
" The most important messages in this procedure are:
(1) Always Create a Video File for your project before attempting to burn a DVD,
(2) Never try to burn a DVD with anything in the timeline display,
(3) Never try to burn a DVD using SHARE/Add Project.
(4) Make certain that your BURN properties exactly match your VIDEO FILE properties."

Now, about your sound problem, do any of your video clips playback with sound? from the Libray?, from the timeline? from any other player (e.g., windows media player, etc...

Hi Dave

I am not sure that you are following the recommended procedure.
As a guide you should:-

1 / Capture to Dv-Avi (your footage has been downloaded from the web)

2 / Edit your footage, matching your project properties to your video file properties. (the project is saved as a *.vsp file)(unfortunately VS is looking for compatible dvd files not wmv files)

3 / Share-Create a Video File. ( this renders your project to a Dvd compatible Mpeg 2 file)

4 / Share Create Disc ( Add your video file made in 3 above) (do not add a Video Studio Project).

Your wmv file is very low quality,

The main problem you will have is quality, converting a Wmv file to an Mpeg will not produce a good quality video.
The bit rates, frame sizes and rate are very low to recreate a good dvd.

The duration in seconds is also strange as it works out to be 8.4 hours ????????.

You may be best just playing the video on your pc.

OK

You will need to use the custom option or create your own template to complete the third step Tools—Make Movie Manager.
The template will be available from Share Create Video File just above the Custom option.

I suggest the settings below.

MPEG files
24 Bits,
352 x 240, 29.97 fps
Frame-based
(MPEG-2), 4:3
Video data rate: Variable (Max. 2500 kbps)
Audio data rate: 224 kbps
MPEG audio layer 2, 48 KHz, Stereo

Once this has rendered play the video to check quality, now use this video file to burn a dvd (share create disc—Add Video File)

Again I will be very surprised if you produce a good quality video, but I do wish you luck

Trevor

Trevor, what to I do to correct #2? Start the project again or go to Project Properties and change something?
PS-I am a big Who fan and I see the Who are playing Leeds in June. Are you going?

Hi

You are using a Wmv file which is not Dvd compliant, therefore Video Studio cannot set the project properties as Wmv. Although this is not a problem.

Once you have edited your project you have to Create a Video File from Share.

Trying the settings I suggest may work, but I have doubts as to the quality.

As the saying goes----You can't make a silk purse out of a sow's ear--- but that should not stop you from trying.
I think you would be best buying a Who Dvd.

And yes the Who are in concert at Harewood House just on the outskirts of Leeds, It’s a very good venue, but I think I will be giving it a miss, I do like the music as it is from my era.

Trevor

Ps just noticed your user name--nice one

Thanks for your response. I will work on it.
And try and see The Who. No matter how old you are. You will still leave exhausted and exhilirated. They are still great. You won't be sorry.

With all due respect to all of you trying to help me, I am 99% sure that this VS9 CANNOT take a downloaded Windows Media Video/Audio file and render it to an MPEG file that has audio. I have tried every possible setting. As I have said before, even before I try to Create a Video File, and just play the project there is no audio. I just don't understand what I need to do to accomplish this. I know you all have tried, but could you try again? And yes, I have read everything you have told me to read, have printed it and re-read it, but it just doesn't come out. What am I doing wrong? It must be some very simple setting, or the program just can't do what I am trying to do. Thanks

Try converting it first with SUPER a free piece of software for converting from one format to another

I did, but I will try again. It ran all night because my raw footage is an 8 hour clip (all I need is an hour and a half's worth) and was running fine. When I woke up, it said there was an error and it didn't convert.

8 hours! your original post said 2 and a half. Now that we know this we are dealing with a different kettle of fish.

I take it the 2 and half hours you mentioned is the bit you want to extract from the full 8 hour clip.

Open the wmv with VideoEditor. right click the clip and note down all of its properties.

Now use either multi-trim or the scissors whichever you find the most comfortable to work with and extract the bit you wish to keep.

Now from the share tab, Create video file | Custom | WMV | Options
and then use all of the exisiting settings for that file. Ensure "Smart Render" is enabled. Other than chopping away the bits you don't want there should be very little time involved as you are simply stream copying the exisiting WMV file.

You can now convert that new file into DVD compliant MPEG2 format.

You tell me to use all of the existing settings for my file. The options tab shows that the video file is a little different AND there is no mention of the audio settings AND there is no real way to change the settings, as far as I can tell. What is the sequence to change the settings? The program is rendering, but I'll bet you there is no audio. I've been down this road before.

Hi Dave

As a test, place your wmv video clip in the timeline.

Use the scissors to cut a one minute section.
Delete the remaining clip / s from the timeline.
Drag the one minute clip to the library, you now have a copy of the clip in the timeline to use again if needed.

With the one minute test clip in the timeline:-

Share Create Video File---Select a template or use the custom option using the settings I suggested earlier.
From the ‘options’ button UNCHECK SMART RENDER.

Rendering should be short as the clip is only one minute long, that will save you staying up all night.

Trevor

Where did you download the wmv file from?????????
