Hey, MD, that was one great reply to my question.
I'll give what you say a try, and, yes, probably utimately end up buying a Firewire card and cable (thanks for the brand recommendation, and cable pin structure).
Capture via usb or firewire
Moderator: Ken Berry
I certainly will report back when I've done a few captures and edits. This will take at least a week because I'm about to step out of the house on a 5 day work trip, so I'll only be able to do it next weekend at the earliest.
I must say, I've really appreciated the help I've received on this thread. Altogether this is an excellent forum

Steve,
These new specs are part of the USB2 interface for cameras and camcorders, & webcams (video streaming etc). They run at USB 2 speed. The Spec isn't referencing the USB2 speed. It's the spec's/format of the content being transmitted over a USB2 full speed bus.
I think they call it USB-2E. It's a specification. When I first looked at it I thought it meant USB-2. No it meant the USB2e specification that runs at USB-2 speed.
The Canon site has references to it if you look up the Optura cams etc.
I think I also need that driver loaded to be able to stream video similar to a webcam. The camera has a "Network" mode on the thumb switch.
It will still stream the video via the firewire interface also.
Personnally I use the firewire interface.
I think we are going to see more of this interface for any new HD converter boxes operating on USB-2 connections. One can stream Standard Defintion on the USB-2 interface and if my USB2 interface works for DV then HD streaming should be possible.

Bugs
hi. im a newbie with UVS9. i am hoping you could help me out with my problem with capturing.maddrummer3301 wrote:>>> but the previous post by maddrummer3301 seemed to suggest, if I read it
Start VideoStudio_9 with the camcorder plugged in and turned on.
Goto "Tools" -> "Change Capture Plugin" .
In the next screen there should be 4 listings that ulead provides as drivers:
1- Ulead DirectShow Capture Plugin (This is the Firewire driver)
2 - Ulead DSW MPEG Capture Plug-In (For analog TV cards etc)
3 - MICROMV MPEG Capture Plug-in (Sony's old camcorders, special)
4 - Windows Media Format Capture Plug-in.
Select it as the Capture plugin if it's listed, Then click OK.
If it was listed and you selected it you can then check to see if your camera was picked up by the driver.
If it's working the panasonic camcorder should be listed as "Current Device". Click OK and go back to the timeline.
give it a whirl.
Now, Make sure the FORMAT your capturing in will be DV.avi and NOT Mpeg.
Then before you capture make sure to change the DV Type-2 to Type-1. Change the default DV Type-2 to Type-1 first. I had trouble with type-2 or it may have been greyed out. I don't remember.
Then try controlling the cam.

i did everything you instructed above... i am able to control the camera with Ulead.
the problem now is, whenever i capture, my preview pane is all black. no image. yet my lcd in my jvc is running fine.
when i hit the stop button after trying to capture for a few seconds, i get an error message saying captured file is corrupted and will be automatically deleted.
how do i solve this problem? what should i do? can you help me out? thanks in advance.

Bugs,
What capturing plugin are you using.
Sometimes you have to cycle the camcorder on and off.
Usually if you can't see and preview the video in the preview box then you can't capture as you have experienced.
Sometimes depending on your firewire connection you may have to control the camcorder manually on the camcorder. If you hit the play button on the camcorder the preview screen should be working.
Start by clicking on the "Stop" icon so the camcorder isn't in pause mode. I have an old camcorder that's buggy like that (hey, that's your name!).
If your using straight firewire connection the capturing plugin for VS is the Ulead DirectShow Capture plugin to capture DV format.
If you want to capture in Mpeg format then that's the
Ulead DSW MPEG Capture Plug-in (very cpu intensive, 2.8ghz+ recommended for this with over 1gig of physical ram available)
Before you hit capture make sure you can preview the video.
I always hit the play icon and let the video stablize on the screen for about 5 seconds and then hit the "Capture" Icon.
You may have to exit VS and cleanup your temp file directories.
Then turn the camcorder on and start VS.

Hi, I am just reporting back on my lack of success of capturing video from camcorder to computer via USB2.0 with VS9. I assiduously followed Maddrummer's clear and detailed instructions and but failed at the first hurdle (the camera was not recognised by VS9 when one looked under change capture pluggins). I do think I could have forced it to capture using other means because it 'kind of' showed up on the preview screen, but it looked unstable and unusable, and I wasn't going to damage the Panasonic camcorder.
I could stick with capture via usb 2.0 using the Panasonic software and then edit in VS9. So far this has been quite successful, but really EVERYONE, including the learned maddrummer, advocates firewire, so I too am going to join the throng. That way I can do the whole thing in VS9 (and VS10 when it comes out. Can't wait for that).
Following Maddrummer's suggestion, and based on my own research to confirm this, I've purchased an Adaptec 3 port Firewire card, which I should have here and installed in about a week.
So thanks for all who contributed to this thread.
