Burn to Disk Doesn't Fit Even at Lower Resolution

Post by sobercrow »

I'm hoping someone can help out with this one. DWS is showing before the burn that the size on the burned disk will be 4.2GB on a 4.4GB disk. I try the burn directly to the disk and it ends up failing. I can see that the temporary file created is 4.7GB. So I tried it again with a lower resolution template (the one with 90 minutes estimated). The same exact thing happens when trying to burn. It fails during the actual burn and the temp file is still 4.7GB even at lower resolution.

Any suggestions? Thank you.

Source videos?

What are the attributes of your Source videos? Are they already compliant for the type of disc you are creating? If so, then you need to tell DVD WS 2.x to convert your source videos to your project settings. In the EDIT step, under the VIDEO tab you will see a checkbox to "Convert to disc template" -- make sure you check that box. There is also one under the AUDIO tab for the audio.

Smaller DVD Files

Post by papcom »

I had a similar problem. My project showed only 3.8 Gbyte and should go one a 4.4 Gbyte Disk. It was not possible to burn the disk!

I guess it has to do with the Audiofile, because when I check the mpeg-file on my disk..it has exactly 3.8 Gb, but the audiofile had another 950 Mb (PCM wav File)

Someone said that I should try to encode the audio as AC3 and then the audiofile is much smaller. Unfortunately I do not have a license for AC3 Encoding.

Yes you do - it's built into WS2. Select a profile that has AC3 in the title and then make sure that that conform to disk template is checked for all your audio clips.

AC3 is much more compatable with players than PCM and will free up a lot of disk space.

Which version?

The DVD WS 2.x Trial version does not support Dolby Digital audio (in case that's what is being used)...

I've been using DVDshrink

Post by DVDDoug »

I've been using DVDshrink (free).

I capture with the highest quality MPEG my capture card has. (And, I'll leave everything at the highest quality.) When I'm done authoring, I'll "burn" the project to the hard drive. If I have a 5-6GB VIDEO_TS file, I'll use DVDshrink to squeeze it down.

DVDshrink was created to squeeze a DVD-9 onto a single-layer DVD-R, and it analyzes & calculates so that it re-compresses "just enough" to fit. The resulting file will fill-up the DVD-R.

Now, I'm pretty sure that any re-coding results in lower quality than using the "correct" compression, and encoding only once. But with VHS as a source, and a plain-old low-definition TV, the results have been quite good.

And yes, AC3 will help. LPCM will typically use-up about 25% of your DVD (~1GB). AC3 will typically use-up less than about 10% (~350MB).
