How may I run PhotoImpact in non-administrator user account

Post by Old Kappa »

HELLO TO ALL

I have an annoying problem

In the FAQ there is
Q: I upgraded to Windows® XP from Windows® 98 but I cannot run Ulead software anymore. Why?

A: You need to login to Windows® XP as the Power-User or Administrator in order to run Ulead software.

I have this problem in my new PC since I have 4 user's accounts with no administrative powers, is there a way to correct it and be able for all to use PhotoImpact ?

For security reasons (Trojans, worns, viruses...) one should avoid working with Administrative powers and have an open internet connection. I am very surprised by Ulead's answer.

I would really appreciate receiving an answer.

Best regards.

If you right click the shortcut icon and select
properties | advanced
There is an option to run as a different user which can be the administrator.
It will however require you to enter the other users password if that user has one.

In my interpretation of things there has been a misunderstanding.

You need to have administrator rights to install the program. As long as you do it right, any user can use the program afterwards. It is important though that the user has read, write, delete rights for the PI folder and the location of the temp files.

Hello,

Steve...THANKS...It works!!!

I wonder why ULEAD never thought of it in their FAQ!!!

From the normal user account you run the program and it will show you a dropping list of administrator&power-users.

Choose one and log the corresponding user's password.

The program will execute normally but you will be in a more secure environment since your actual users account doesn't have administrator's wrights.

Hi Heinz,

I did have full administrator rights when installing but it just gave an error message when launched by a non-administrator ('The application failed to initialize properly (0xc0000142).Click OK to terminate the application').

Thanks to all!!!

Antonio

P.S.: Connecting to the board is painfully slow. Is it normal? It reminded me of the good old days of 9K modem connections!

You can use an power user account which is not an Administrator. There are some restrictions from Microsoft if you log-in as a limited user. For example, program cannot write to some location in your hard disk if log-in as an limited user.

Hope this helps.

Some apps require in practice that you run them with Administrator privileges at least once.

When I had similar problem in PI10 it appeared, the problem really was PI did not support national characters in account name (corrected later in patch).

I have a system of removable internal hard drives and have confirmed that this also occurs when I place a different hard drive into my computer as the boot drive with drive letter "C" allocated. My Programs are all installed on that C drive.

I have found that PhotoImpact will only load and run when the user account that installed PhotoImpact is selected. The user accounts I have tested this with are all members of the XP Administrator Account.

If I attempt to start PhotoImpact from any other account then PhotoImpact stops at this screen then after about a minute PhotoImpact closes down.

Image

You can make PhotoImpact work if you use the Run As option and specify the User Account that installed the product.

I have been through the Windows Registry, The various Hard Drive Folders
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Ulead Systems\Ulead PhotoImpact\11.0
C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Application Data\Ulead Systems\Ulead PhotoImpact\11.0
C:\Program Files\Common Files\Ulead Systems
C:\Program Files\Ulead Systems\Ulead PhotoImpact 11

And Specifically any Sub-Folders or Registry keys containing reference to
"Profiles" comparing entries and also Security Account Permissions
all to no avail.

It appears that PhotoImpact is restricted to one user per machine.

I had the same type of trouble with an old Ulead program (Iphoto Plus 4) in XP, in which it would only run in an Administrator account.

My solution which worked for me was to give my Limited User account full control of the following files or folders via the XP Security Permissions.

C:\WINDOWS\Ulead.dat
C:\WINDOWS\Ulead.dat\ULead32.ini
C:\Program Files\Iphoto Plus 4

I would have used the "Run As" option but this is not possible to use on images which arrive as E-mail attachments in Outlook Express while in a Limited User account without saving the file from OE to some other location first.

Anyway I no longer have a problem.
