VS9 Video Problems
I have VS9 and am new to it. Im trying to edit a 20 second video that i have. When i watch it in WMP it shows perfectly, and when its previewing in VS9 it also shows perfectly. The video almost completely scrambles and gets blurry whenever i try to add a video filter or anything. Anyone know whats wrong? again, im very new, so any help is appreciated, thanks.

Alrite, ive looked over those threads and im not sure how/if they pertain to my particular problem. I put in my computer specs. Im not sure if its just options or what, but not being able to add any video filters or anything seems pretty rediculous if the video is practically unviewable after the filter(s) are applied.

Sorry about that, here ya go.
Nature of the problem: Video blurs/scrambles once i add any effects to it. It is practically unreadable(any text that exists) and unviewable.
Properties of your source files

What devices are involved and their mode of connection?
FRAPS.
I believe it may be software/option related. Would not installing the bonus cd have anything to do with this.
Project Settings - stock settings, havnt touched anything.
Output format - Havnt changed anything, id like it to be mpeg/avi/divx.
System information - in profile. My video specs should be completely fine, and more than enough.
Thanks all.

Yeah don't get too happy, I just got in out of my depth here!
From those properties it seems that the Fraps program has its own flavor of video compression.
Probably because of that when you apply a filter in VS the thing goes crazy because VS can play it but does not have the codecs to do anything else with it.
Unless someone else comes on with a better understanding of this process you could try just loading the clip into the timeline, then re-rendering it as DV AVI type 1. You may get a smooth conversion that will allow you to apply filters.

Why don't you do as is suggested by FRAPS?
Your AVI is incompatible with any video/TV standard. Throwing that at VS, I'm not surprised that all that comes out is crap. Why is the AVI movie generated by Fraps so big? How can I reduce the size?
The filesize is big because there isn’t enough time to encode the movie while the game is running. The movie frames are slightly compressed, but still require a large amount of disk space due to the high resolutions. Once you have finished capturing you should convert the saved AVI into one of the popular compressed movie formats such as mpeg or divx. Recommended programs for doing this are tmpgenc (Tsunami Mpeg Encoder), and VirtualDub.
Using VirtualDub is quite easy. To create a compressed version of the AVI follow these steps:
* Start VirtualDub
* Select File->Open and choose the AVI in the Fraps directory you wish to compress.
* Select Video->Compression and choose the codec you wish to compress with (usually divx)
* Select File->Save As AVI and specify a filename for the new AVI.
If you have Windows XP you can also use Windows Movie Maker to compress the video files. If you use Windows Movie Maker it's recommended that you keep your Fraps video files at 800x600 or under.

thank you very much. i used virtualdub to compress it. i first tried a few divx codecs that it listed but those both came up with an error. I tired a microsoft mpeg4 codec and it worked, compressed it to 10.2MBs but it put little scrambled swirls randomly in the middle of the video. I understand that this may not be the area of your expertise guys but could u recomend something for me to download to use as a compression?

I want to take different video clips of the game World of Warcraft that i capture with fraps, put them together, add a filter or two and maybe a few transitions. As long as its decent quality and a size probably no smaller than 500x300 im happy. Ive tried different compressions and i just cant get this video at a decent size/quality and able to use it in VS9

My only thoughts on this are that if you are having trouble compressing the existing files then you may be looking at a two step process. The existing files obviously are not editable and compressing to another codec leaves them, more or less, uneditable. As an experiment try to take one clip, unedited, and place it in the timeline of VS. Go to share and convert it to DV AVI. If VS can do that conversion then you now have an editable format that you can do you cuts and transitions with and will, most likely, compres to WMV successfully.
Aside from that I am afraid I have no more suggestions.
