Searched and still have questions
New user here for VS 8, came witht the Plextor m402u unit. Question is I have multiple options to capture analog video (vhs-c thru vcr machine) The highest quality capture is to a AVI file. I have been reading that mpeg2 is also good(can capture to this too). Basically I am trying to put all the old tapes onto dvd with minimal editing. Just put them together by type of event and child. Bday, Christmas etc.. I have an issue with overscan and have solved it by using the cropping filter. Is one format better than the other as far as capture and output? Also the plextor is divX and that comes up at the highest setting. File size will not be an issue on my computer. Any help or input would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!!! Kevin

Kevin,
Read top sticky post for quick overview of Mpeg2 vs. AVI(DV). Quality may be adversly affected by transcoding from one format to another. If you capture analog video to Mpeg2, that is the format you will use to burn DVD - no transcoding. If you capture analog in AVI(DV) format, you will just have to transcode it to Mpeg2 to make the DVD - one transcoding.
I don't know what your overscan issue is but if you use the cropping filter on all your video, you will be seriously modifiying every video frame and this will significantly increase your rendering time and probably reduce your picture quality. I have never felt the need to put every last mm of picture on the screen... If you solve overscan for one TV set, you may experience underscan on others... I wouldn't do it.

John - thanks for the reply. Now I understand. On the overscan, the issue is a have a line at teh bottom of teh video. I have searched all the messages and most say this will not show when the dvd is played back onto a tv. It does for me so I was trying to crop it out. I'll search some more on this. Thanks again! Kevin
