Is 13GB the DVD project size or the total size of the source files?

Make sure you have enough space in the working folder. To know how many space will be needed in your hard disk, check the Require space information in the Finish stage.

Hope this helps.

Lets get back to basics.
1. Please complete your system specificactions in your user profile.
2. Please detail the source of your files, method of capture and settings employed, file type, bit rates, screen dimensions etc.
3. What did you do with those captured files, have you edited them in any way. If so have you exported that edited file into a DVD compliant format.
4. How Much hard drive space is there remaining on your system. How many hard drives. Which Hard drive are your system files and program files on. Which hard drives are your movie files on.
5. Which version of MovieFactory are you using. Is it a full version, trial version SE version or a componenet part of Media Studio 8?
6. Have you applied all necessary patches.

We need as much information from you as you are able to provide so that we are then able to respond with suggested remedies to your problem.

One more thing. If you haven't got 13 GB  of free space on your HDD to save this project, how do you expect to be able to do anything with it after?

We do need your details as requested by Steve.

sorry i made a mistake, the entire project is actualyy 15gb when it is finished, the files are all in XvID (they take up less room on my hard drive when they are XviD!) So the files are .avi files

i have 48.9 gb free on harddisk, ulead says i need to have 36.37gb free ( it think tahts ais a a bit over teh top but i do have it!)

i am running on XP home SP2
AMD Atholon 64 3700+
1GB of kingten RAM
120GB SATA Harddrive
i thnk that will be all the info you need!

i am using a full version of ULead Movie factory 4 which i have updated to 4.2 (it think!)

this is very strange becuase i appear to have all ofthe right options and enough space!

thanks!

Enough space you say  49 GB?

I'm afraid not. When dealing with video, you need space, lots of it.

Just think about it, your OS needs some free space to swap memory content to and fro, your program needs room for the temp and preview files, to use a video editor to manipulate any video file, you need at least twice the size of your video file in contiguous disk space, not fragmented all over your disk.

When looking at some of the more experienced user around the forum and the systems they use, why do you think we all got oodles of hard disk space? We are not megalomaniacs, at least not all :) , and don’t invest in hard disks as a hobby

......
Aha there is the problem!!

Firstly please read my post describing MPEG files and AVI files here:
http://phpbb.ulead.com.tw/EN/viewtopic.php?t=12118

Now the thing that is confusing to most users are the generic terms MPEG and AVI. Generally speaking AVI is a lossless format, but that is only a generalisation.

MPEG4 / Xvid / DivX are all very similar and for all intents and purposes could be described as being the same. They are an extremely highly compressed format but retain a very high quality and are perhaps the best formats to use if you want to share videos over the internet.

They are not designed to be played in a standard standalone DVD player though a few are now starting to creep into the consumer market.

Normal DVD files are made up of VOB files which are in fact MPEG2 files but they also contain a bit more information, this is why simply renaming VOB to MPG generally speaking enables you to use the VOB as a standard MPEG.

an example of how compressed DivX etc are can be seen in a one hour TV episode downloaded from the internet - it will be approx 360MB.
If you now convert that into a standard MPEG2 it will now increase in size to something like twice that size perhaps 800MB - and don't forget this is only MPEG2 which is also regarding as a highly compressed format.

Had the original DivX file been converted to AVI file type DV type 1 then it would have increased to something like 13GB file size.

What you need to take into account is how long is the video in time.
At best quality aim to place about 1 hour onto a 4.3 GB DVD disk.
You can squeeze up to about 3 hours at VHS quality.

I have placed a table of suggested quality settings here:

Hi,

Instead of creating the harddisk image or dvd folders use the EXPORT feature of MF4 to create your mpeg2 file(s). Their isn't a limitation on that.
Then you can use Nero Recode or Shrink to collaspe the mpeg2 file down to dvd size.
Then after shrinking the video import it into a new project as a compliant file (HA) and create the 4.370 disk.

Why don't you simply export the video at the correct bit-rates to fit on a dvd?
After you shrink a video it's not technically compliant you know. It's the same as a "Mis-Labeled Box" except it's a "Mis-Labeled Video".

I must admit its a bit of a hidden function that most people probably don't even realise exists.

From the opening screen where you select "New project"
Start new project and click next.
Add Media and import a video file.
This is now on the timeline at the bottom of the screen.
Clcik that clip once so that it is in the selected state.
Immediately to the left of that first clip are 4 icons, the second one up from the bottom is Export Selected clips (Or you can use Alt-K)

This will enable you to export the clip as a DVD compliant MPEG2 file.
