At least now we can talk about your problems on PI.
Xyzzy2 wrote:why PI crashes on start every 2nd or 3rd startup?
It's not easy to tell. However, from your case it reminds me that some PI versions will crash when some MSN Messenger plug-in is installed in the system. I remember it's called MSN Shell and is made by people in China to crack some features of MSN Messenger. Maybe there is something conflicted in your system like this case?

It's also possible that PI cannot write its settings to the hard disk properly, but that means there is something wrong with your hard disk.
Xyzzy2 wrote:And why the patch has problem with locating it?
That might be:

1. PI is not installed properly so the patch cannot find the right registry setting to know PI is installed.
2. The installer is not downloaded properly.
3. The PI version you use already has the patch installed.
4. The memory module in your system is bad or is not working properly so the program (either PI or the patch installer) is not working properly.
Xyzzy2 wrote:Please don't tell me to reinstall PI or Windows. I've already tried that.
So I will not try to.
Xyzzy2 wrote:And the most funny thing which I've learnt from this board is that some day it may start working. Just like this.
Yes, it's possible, especially in the MSN Shell case. Once you remove the MSN plug-in, PI will run properly.
Xyzzy2 wrote:And my greatest wish is that Ulead proves me dead wrong some day.
I don't fancy being always right. I fancy using a nice program.
Hope what I say here can help you.

To me PI is a nice program, wish someday it will work for you, too.

I have been one to advise people to stay with their older versions of PI if they were doing what needed to be done.

To me PI 10 has never been troublesome until I installed the full version, not an upgrade, of PI 11. All hell broke lose after that.

After many attempts to right things, I came to realise that it was something with MF 3 DiskCreator that was causing my problems. Not sure what it was but I went to upgrade to MF 4 DiskCreator and am happy to report that all is well now.

I'm slowly using PI 11 more and more and am beginning to like it :P

I was working on a large (A4 size photo @ 600ppi) in 24 bit tiff format and PI 10 started to choke on it. I remembered that someone once said that PI 11 is actually better designed to take advantage of the installed RAM and Hyper threading technology than PI 10. I tried it and it just cruised along.

Thanks for the info about Messenger. That is where the Trojan Horse virus came through when I was downloading. I have since unchecked RAS, and removed Messenger altogether. Never used the service anyway.

I got new idea now, but it won't be easy or fast to check. I will install minimal version of XP with nLite and check- maybe there is something extremely specific to Polish build of XP??? But it's not today or tomorrow.

Memory might be suspicious, but the problems are with only one application. Also a one-hour check with RAM-testing tools showed nothing.

I use some resident software, but I remember trying PI on a fresh Windows install (only Windows components installed) with no success (it was before patch release though).

I use non-standard path (d:\apps\Ulead Systems\) for Ulead software, but in registry paths are registered OK.

I don't use Messenger and allow only selected applications through firewall. I don't use pirated software (so no cracks that may affect system behaviour) or anything "strange".

Thanks.

I would suggest this time you can try to install PI in its default path and see what will happen. I install my PI in its default path: C:\Program Files\Ulead Systems\Ulead PhotoImpact 11.

After re-installing PI11 and running the update patch again, the strange behaviour (bug) of the text tool miraculously has gone! Consequently I will work with version 11 in future. Thank you, htchien, for your hint to re-install!

I don't have enough space on C: to install PI, so it won't happen. Also keenart stated that PI has troubles supporting multiple user accounts on PC, and that's a must for me.
It seems that PI belongs to small minority of applications that has troubles with these two factors.
Shouldn't PI have 'beta' in its name.... permanently. At least we would know what we deal with...

Oh, one more thing, if by any chance you have anything to do with Ulead (seems so, but I may be wrong):
Do I need multiple licenses for two people running PI at the same time, with Fast User Switching feature?
And if I happen to have 3 user accounts on my PC and only I use PI, do I need 3 licenses?

Someone from Ulead told me the 11.0.0.1 update pack would fix the multiple user account crash issue with TBYB version.

And for the license issue, he also told me the EULA is per PC, not per account, so it's OK to use PI with multiple accounts. But, you can only run 1 PI instance at 1 time. That is, before you switch to another user account you must close PI to avoid conflicts.

Only One Patch for any Version of PI

Post by dwightmccann »

I have used PI since V3. I have never seen more than one patch even though there have been dozens of unresolved issues. There are numerous well known and well documented repeatable bugs in the current patched version of PI 11. Most of these are the result of poor programming practices (so says the programmer with 30+ years of experience) and should be corrected, but they will not be because Ulead support at this level is very, very poor. It is also quite obvious that the online help is exceedingly inadequate with most functions mentioned but not explained or properly enumerated. The number of tutorials is pathetic. OTOH, we get what we pay for and PI is very, very cheap. And the parts that work correctly are easy to use. But as more things break and stay broken and as more features are removed (what happened to resize by percent and why don't we have resize with longest and/or shortest sides ... I do this with IrfanView now which has superb resize support and is shareware) I expect we will slowly be forced to move away from it. I have CS2 and keep trying to wean myself away from my seven year investment in PI, sigh.
