Is there a way to maintain layer names when merging?

Post by Bobed2121 »

I use alot of the templates for my DVD menus from the Library in PI11. I use these menus in Sony Vegas. I have to make certain layer naming conventions and save as layerd PhotoShop PSD files to get them to work in Vegas Video. One stipulation for the background is to be sure it's named background-01 for it to work with Vegas. Anytime I add something to the menu like text, select the text and background then merge as single object the layer gets renamed to something generic. Is there a way to keep it named background-01 and have the objects merge to [that] layer?

Not completely, and if you remember in a previous post, PI does not use multiple layers, but multiple objects. The only layer is the background. Therefore, the background name Base always remains static, or unchangeable.

Workaround:
In PI11, you can select all of the objects and merge to a single group with a name. Do not merge the Object Group with the Base. Create a new Group of Objects.

Now that you have a Layer named Base and a two Groups of Objects in PI11, save your file in *.PSD file format. Open Photoshop, and rename the layers and save the file.

The point is that PI will treat Object Groups as Layers when it saves to *.PSD, but if reopened, PI11 will treat the file as a single layer with multiple objects and rename accordingly.

This technique will work with limitations.
